2026 World Cup: Morocco land in Monterrey as Netherlands showdown looms

Morocco have arrived in Monterrey as preparations intensify for their 2026 World Cup Round of 16 meeting with the Netherlands, with the Atlas Lions switching base after completing their group-stage campaign in the United States.

The team, led by head coach Mohamed Ouahbi, made the journey to Mexico ahead of Monday’s knockout fixture, which will be played at Estadio Monterrey.

Kick-off is scheduled for the night of Monday 29 June into Tuesday 30 June at 02:00 local time (07:00 Moroccan time).

The move marks a key shift in Morocco’s tournament logistics, as teams now operate from different countries within the expanded World Cup format hosted across the United States, Mexico and Canada.

The transition from group-stage venues in the United States to Monterrey represents more than just travel.

It signals the start of the knockout phase, where every match carries immediate consequence.

Morocco go into the tie after a strong group stage campaign, earning qualification and setting up a high-profile meeting with a Netherlands side widely viewed among the tournament favourites.

Estadio BBVA, known locally as the “Steel Giant,” will host the encounter.

The stadium is expected to provide a major stage for one of the most closely watched matches of the Round of 16, with both sides aiming to continue their World Cup journey.

For Morocco, the challenge is significant. The team now face a Dutch side with pedigree and depth, while also adjusting to a new environment and travel demands.

The Atlas Lions’ progression has already drawn attention following a confident group-stage showing, and expectations continue to rise as they enter the elimination rounds.

The fixture also shapes the wider knockout bracket. The winner of Morocco vs Netherlands will progress to face the victor of the Canada vs South Africa tie in the next round, keeping alive the possibility of another African opponent later in the competition.

For now, Morocco’s focus turns to settling in Monterrey, finalising preparations, and adapting quickly to conditions in Mexico as they attempt to take another step forward in the tournament.
