Germany and Ivory Coast will battle for top spot in Group E when the two unbeaten sides meet in one of the standout fixtures of the second round of matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Both nations opened their campaigns with victories, setting up a contest that could go a long way towards deciding who finishes first in the group and secures the most favourable route into the knockout stages.
Germany arrive full of confidence after producing one of the performances of the tournament so far. The four-time world champions silenced doubts surrounding their recent World Cup record with a ruthless 7-1 demolition of Curaçao, showcasing the attacking quality that has made them one of the favourites for the title.
Ivory Coast, meanwhile, took a very different route to victory. The Elephants displayed discipline, organisation and resilience to frustrate Ecuador before striking late through a dramatic 90th-minute winner to secure all three points.
Germany’s stance
The contrast in styles makes this encounter particularly intriguing.
Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann is expected to stick with his expansive attacking approach, built around the creativity of Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala. The pair were instrumental in dismantling Curaçao and will once again be tasked with unlocking opposition defences.
The Germans could also make changes in attack after Deniz Undav impressed from the bench with a goal and two assists in the opening match. His performance may earn him a starting berth ahead of Leroy Sané.
For Ivory Coast, the challenge will be containing Germany’s relentless attacking threat while remaining dangerous on the counterattack. Midfield leader Franck Kessié is expected to play a crucial role in shielding the defence and breaking up German attacks.
Ivory Coast’s method
Going forward, much of the responsibility will fall on Amad Diallo, who arrives in excellent form and has emerged as one of the tournament’s early standout performers. His pace and direct running could provide the Elephants with their best route to goal.
Ivory Coast do, however, have concerns at the back. Defender Evan Ndicka remains a major doubt due to a hamstring problem, and his absence would be a significant blow against one of the most potent attacks in the competition.
With both teams on three points, victory would place the winner in a commanding position to secure first place in Group E and qualification for the Round of 32.
Germany’s firepower makes them slight favourites, but Ivory Coast have already shown they possess the defensive organisation and resilience needed to frustrate elite opposition. If the Elephants can withstand the early German pressure, they could yet spring another surprise on the World Cup stage.
