France winger Michael Olise will go into Thursday’s FIFA World Cup quarter-final against Morocco carrying a yellow card after FIFA rejected an appeal to overturn the booking.
The decision means the Bayern Munich attacker remains one caution away from suspension as France prepare to face the Atlas Lions in Boston for a place in the semi-finals.
Had the appeal been successful, Olise would have entered the match without the risk of missing a potential last-four encounter. Instead, another yellow card against Morocco would rule him out of the semi-final should France progress.
The French Football Federation had asked FIFA to review the caution Olise received late in France’s 1-0 victory over Paraguay in the Round of 16.
French officials argued that the incident did not warrant a booking and hoped the disciplinary record would be amended before the quarter-final.
The yellow card followed an exchange between Olise and Paraguay midfielder Matias Galarza.
According to reports, television replays showed the France winger grabbing Galarza’s shirt but making no contact with the midfielder’s head.
France head coach Didier Deschamps confirmed on Wednesday that FIFA had decided to uphold the original decision.
“There was no change when it comes to Olise’s yellow card. We received FIFA’s decision this morning that the yellow card was maintained,” Deschamps said.
The ruling does not prevent Olise from featuring against Morocco, but it adds another layer of pressure for one of France’s most influential attacking players.
The winger will have to approach the quarter-final knowing that any further caution would carry significant consequences if France advance.
As an attacker regularly involved in pressing opponents, defensive recoveries and physical duels, maintaining discipline could become an important part of his performance.
The decision also leaves Deschamps with an additional tactical consideration during the match.
If the contest becomes increasingly physical or France establish a lead late in the game, the coach may have to decide whether to keep Olise on the pitch or substitute him to reduce the risk of suspension ahead of a possible semi-final.
France had hoped FIFA would reach a different conclusion after arguing the booking was unjustified.
The appeal reflected concerns that losing one of their key attacking players could affect their chances later in the tournament.
Olise forms part of an impressive French forward line alongside Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele and Bradley Barcola, a group that has helped France emerge as one of the strongest attacking teams at the World Cup.

The Atlas Lions know one of France’s most creative players must navigate the match carefully, with no room for another disciplinary offence.
FIFA’s decision also comes after scrutiny surrounding another disciplinary case involving United States forward Folarin Balogun.
Balogun’s one-match suspension following a red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina was suspended for a one-year probationary period, allowing him to feature against Belgium.
That decision attracted criticism from Belgium before the match, while United States President Donald Trump said he had asked FIFA president Gianni Infantino to review the incident.
Despite those circumstances, FIFA chose not to alter its decision regarding Olise.
