2026 World cup: Colombia finish top of group K after goalless draw with Portugal

Colombia secured top spot in Group K after a hard-fought 0-0 draw with Portugal in the final round of group-stage matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The encounter, played at Miami Stadium in Florida before a crowd of nearly 65,000 spectators, produced numerous chances but no goals as both teams failed to convert promising opportunities. The result ensured Colombia advanced to the knockout stage as group winners on seven points, while Portugal progressed in second place with five points.

The Democratic Republic of Congo also qualified from the group as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams with four points, while Uzbekistan exited without collecting a point.

End-to-End Opening Half Produces No Breakthrough

Despite the absence of goals, the first half offered plenty of attacking football, with both teams creating opportunities in an entertaining contest.

Portugal came close to opening the scoring in the 39th minute when Bruno Fernandes struck from inside the penalty area, but Colombia goalkeeper Camilo Vargas produced an important save to keep the match level.

Only three minutes later, João Félix drove into the Colombian penalty area before unleashing a powerful effort that narrowly cleared the crossbar.

Colombia also threatened before the interval. Moments before half-time, experienced midfielder James Rodríguez tested Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa with a powerful low strike from outside the area, but Costa reacted well to preserve the deadlock.

Neither side was able to find the finishing touch before the break, although the attacking intent from both teams suggested the match could still produce a decisive moment.

Colombia Increase Pressure After the Interval

Colombia emerged from the dressing room with renewed purpose and spent much of the second half applying sustained pressure on the Portuguese defence.

Portugal, led by captain Cristiano Ronaldo, were forced into a more defensive approach as Colombia looked for the goal that would underline their control of the contest.

One of the clearest opportunities came in the 55th minute when midfielder Jhon Arias fired a powerful shot towards goal. However, Costa was positioned well and punched the effort away from danger.

Portugal continued to defend resolutely while looking for opportunities on the counterattack, but clear-cut chances became increasingly limited as the contest entered its closing stages.

VAR Denies Colombia Dramatic Winner

The most dramatic moment of the match arrived in the opening minute of stoppage time.

Colombia thought they had secured all three points when defender Davinson Sánchez headed the ball into the net, sparking celebrations among the Colombian players and supporters.

However, referee Alireza Faghani consulted the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), and the goal was subsequently ruled out for offside, leaving the score unchanged.

The decision ensured the match ended in a goalless draw, despite both sides creating enough opportunities to claim victory.

Group Standings Confirm Knockout Qualification

The draw was enough for Colombia to finish at the summit of Group K with seven points from three matches.

Portugal ended the group phase in second place on five points, comfortably securing their place in the knockout rounds.

Congo DR claimed third position with four points and also progressed as one of the competition’s best third-placed teams, while Uzbekistan finished bottom of the standings after losing all three matches.

The result means Colombia enter the knockout stage with momentum after completing the group phase unbeaten, while Portugal also advance knowing they remain difficult opponents after holding firm under sustained Colombian pressure. The contest may have finished without a goal, but it featured chances at both ends and late VAR drama before confirming the final Group K standings and the identities of the teams progressing to the next stage of the tournament.
