Former Al Ahly striker Osama Hosny has warned Imam Ashour that no player is bigger than the Egyptian club, urging the midfielder to change his attitude, restore his performances and take greater responsibility for his career.
Hosny delivered the message during a television appearance on MBC Egypt, where he acknowledged Ashour’s considerable technical ability but argued that his recent conduct and performances had fallen short of expectations.
The former Al Ahly forward said Ashour had established himself at both club and international level over several years, but needed to recognise the importance of the team above individual status.
He also reminded the midfielder that Al Ahly had continued winning trophies despite the departure or retirement of several celebrated players, adding that disagreements with the club were more damaging to the individual than to the institution.
According to Hosny, Al Ahly’s history shows that no player is indispensable, while a footballer’s relationship with supporters can suffer when problems arise away from the pitch.
Hosny says Ashour has lost support among Al Ahly fans
Hosny also expressed concern about Ashour’s standing among sections of the Al Ahly fanbase, suggesting that the midfielder had lost some of the goodwill he previously enjoyed.
He explained that winning trophies and delivering strong performances help players build a positive relationship with supporters, but that reputation can be weakened by off-field incidents.
One issue highlighted by Hosny was Ashour’s failure to travel with the Al Ahly delegation, which he believes affected the player’s popularity.
He argued that supporters can understand periods of poor form, but expect players to demonstrate commitment, accept responsibility and respect the importance of wearing the club’s shirt.
Ashour’s situation has therefore become about more than his performances on the pitch, with Hosny insisting that professionalism and discipline are equally important.
The former striker said the midfielder now had an opportunity to put matters right, particularly after his return to training and the explanation that his previous absence from the team was for technical reasons.
Hosny was also critical of Ashour’s contribution in recent matches, saying his display against Zamalek did not meet expectations and that he lacked energy and influence during his appearance against Al-Qanah.
On the question of his physical condition, Hosny stressed that the medical team should have the final say on whether the midfielder is fit to play. He said Ashour should only return to competitive action once his fitness and safety have been established.
Contract renewal and life away from football
Hosny also discussed Ashour’s contract situation, suggesting that negotiations over a new deal had occupied the player’s attention in recent months.
He noted that Al Ahly players had renewed their contracts within the financial limits established by the club, while arguing that mental stability was important if Ashour was to rediscover his best form.
The former forward further defended the technical director’s authority to leave the midfielder out of the starting line-up if his performances did not justify selection.
He suggested that time away from the team could instead provide Ashour with an opportunity to assess his situation, improve his work and return as a stronger player.
Hosny’s message extended beyond football, with a call for Ashour to work harder in training and pay closer attention to his lifestyle and behaviour outside the club. He stressed that a player’s personal choices can have a significant effect on their professional development and longevity.
He concluded by encouraging Ashour to listen to the advice of former Al Ahly player Saleh Gomaa, pointing to the difficulties Gomaa experienced during his own time at the club.
Hosny’s final warning was that players may not fully appreciate the value of representing Al Ahly until they leave and experience life away from the club.
