Vipers seal Uganda Premier League title with game to spare

Vipers SC have been crowned champions of the 2025/26 Uganda Premier League after a commanding 3-0 victory over Maroons FC secured the title with one match still left to play.

The triumph marks the eighth league crown in the history of the Kitende-based club and strengthens their growing status among East Africa’s leading football sides.

It also guarantees their return to continental football, with Vipers set to represent Uganda in the 2025/26 CAF Champions League.

Needing victory to mathematically confirm the championship, the Venoms produced a clinical performance at Wankulukuku Stadium in front of club president Dr Lawrence Mulindwa.

Veteran forward Yunus Sentamu gave the visitors the perfect start when he struck in only the second minute, immediately easing any nerves surrounding the title race.

Vipers continued to dominate proceedings and later added further goals through Usama Arafat and Karim Watambala to complete an emphatic win.

The result lifted Vipers to 64 points from 29 matches, leaving them five clear of closest challengers KCCA FC, who could only manage a goalless draw away to URA FC at Nakivubo.

With only one round of fixtures remaining, KCCA can no longer catch the newly crowned champions.

The title success continues Vipers’ rise as one of the dominant forces in Ugandan football over the last decade.

Their latest triumph moves them ahead of Express FC, who have won seven league titles, although traditional giants SC Villa and KCCA still remain the most decorated clubs in the competition’s history with 17 and 13 titles respectively.

Under Belgian coach Jacky Minnaert, Vipers have combined consistency with attacking efficiency throughout the campaign.

Tuesday’s performance reflected the qualities that have defined their season, with quick attacking football, defensive organisation and composure in decisive moments all on display.

The early goal from Sentamu set the tone for a side determined to avoid any final-day drama.

Arafat’s contribution further tightened their grip on the contest before Watambala sealed victory to spark celebrations among the travelling supporters and club officials.

Elsewhere in the Uganda Premier League, several matches ended in draws as teams continued to battle for position heading into the final round of the campaign.

UPDF FC and Calvary FC played out a goalless stalemate, while Police FC drew 1-1 with Entebbe UPPC.

There were also draws between Bidco FC and Kitara FC, as well as Express FC and Lugazi FC.

For Vipers, however, the evening belonged entirely to them as they wrapped up the title race in convincing style and added another chapter to the club’s growing legacy in Ugandan football.
