Uganda secured a 1-1 draw against Tunisia in Radès, recovering from an early deficit to claim a valuable result in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
The hosts took the lead in the 12th minute through Adem Arous after making an energetic start under new head coach Mouine Chaâbani.
Uganda responded positively to the setback, remaining competitive and preventing Tunisia from turning their early advantage into a decisive lead. The Cranes stayed in the contest as the match progressed and eventually found a way back into the game.
Their pressure and persistence were rewarded in the 68th minute when Rogers Mato scored the equaliser.
Mato’s goal ensured Uganda left Radès with a point and ended Tunisia’s hopes of holding on to their early advantage. The result represents an important outcome for Paul Put’s side as they continue their preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
Uganda will co-host the 2027 tournament alongside Kenya and Tanzania. As one of the host nations, Uganda have already secured their place at the finals.
The draw therefore adds to Uganda’s preparations ahead of the tournament, while Tunisia will have to settle for a share of the points after surrendering their lead in the second half.
Tunisia had appeared to be in control after Arous put them ahead in the opening stages, but Uganda’s response kept the match evenly contested. The Cranes remained organised enough to stay within reach of the hosts before Mato’s second-half intervention changed the outcome.
For Uganda, the point away from home provides encouragement as Put continues to prepare his squad for the 2027 finals. Their automatic qualification as co-hosts means their focus can be placed on building a competitive team ahead of the tournament.
The 1-1 scoreline also highlights Uganda’s ability to respond after conceding early. Rather than allowing Tunisia’s fast start to dictate the match, the Cranes maintained their competitiveness and eventually produced the goal they needed.
Arous’ 12th-minute opener had given Tunisia the advantage, but Mato’s 68th-minute equaliser ensured the hosts could not claim victory.
Uganda’s next stages of preparation will now take place with the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations firmly in sight. Their draw in Radès provides Paul Put’s team with a notable result as they continue that process.
