Torino have opened talks about bringing Brighton striker Evan Ferguson back to Italy, with the Republic of Ireland international being considered for a loan move to Serie A.
According to calciomercato.com, citing La Stampa, the Italian club have contacted Ferguson’s representatives to assess whether a deal could be reached. Torino are looking at the possibility of offering the 20-year-old an opportunity to rebuild his career after a difficult spell at Roma.
The Granata are assessing their attacking options as they prepare for the season ahead. Che Adams could still leave the club, while Duvan Zapata’s fitness continues to be a concern. Those uncertainties have encouraged Torino to consider Ferguson as a potential addition to their forward line and part of their plans under Abate.
A move to Turin could give Ferguson the regular playing time he needs after his progress stalled last season.
The striker spent the campaign on loan at Roma but made only 22 appearances and scored five goals. Three of those goals came in Serie A, while an ankle injury ultimately ended his season early after he underwent surgery in the spring.
Ferguson’s time at Roma did not lead to a permanent transfer. The club had an option to buy him for about €40m but decided against taking it up. Following his injury-hit campaign, that valuation is now understood to have fallen to roughly €20m.
Brighton are willing to consider moving Ferguson on and would be prepared to approve another loan, according to the report. That arrangement is the option Torino are currently pursuing, as they seek to strengthen their attacking options without committing immediately to a permanent deal.
Ferguson is now outside Brighton’s first-team plans and is looking for a return to consistent football. Before his recent setbacks, he had been regarded as one of Europe’s most promising young forwards and had attracted significant attention for his goalscoring ability.
A move back to Serie A would offer him another opportunity in a league he experienced with Roma, although his first spell in Italy was disrupted by limited appearances and the ankle problem that brought it to a premature conclusion.
Torino’s interest comes as they weigh changes in attack, with Adams’ future unresolved and doubts surrounding Zapata’s fitness. Ferguson’s availability on loan, together with the reduced potential cost of a future permanent transfer, could make him an attractive solution for the club.
