Zamalek will begin the defence of their Egyptian Premier League title against Al-Ittihad Alexandria on Friday, 21 August, with several factors threatening to make their opening fixture a difficult test.
The match will be played at Cairo International Stadium as Zamalek start their campaign in a competition that will initially use a single round-robin format before the 20 clubs are split into two groups.
The top six sides will enter a championship group, while teams finishing from seventh to 20th will compete in the second group to determine survival and relegation.
Although the meeting with Al-Ittihad is only the first game of the campaign, circumstances surrounding Zamalek make it particularly significant.
Al-Ittihad have been active in the transfer market, completing 18 signings on the recommendation of coach Hamza El-Gamal. Their new arrivals include former Zamalek players Anas Wael and Ahmed Hamdi.
There are three major reasons why the opening fixture could prove especially demanding for the champions.
1. Zamalek’s preparations have been limited
The first concern is Zamalek’s physical and technical readiness.
The club only began its pre-season camp around 10 days before the league opener and has played just one friendly match, against Plastic.
That limited preparation leaves the coaching staff with little time to build match fitness, establish tactical understanding and give players sufficient minutes before competitive football begins.
The challenge is even greater because Zamalek must integrate new players with members of the existing squad.
Players need time on the pitch to develop an understanding of their team-mates, while the coaching staff also need competitive matches to assess the team’s strengths and weaknesses.
Al-Ittihad, by contrast, started their preparations earlier and have played more friendly matches.
That could give El-Gamal’s side an advantage when the teams meet, particularly in terms of fitness and tactical organisation.
While Al-Ittihad may be closer to their preferred level, Zamalek could still be searching for their best combination and physical condition.
The timing of the match leaves little room for correction. Unlike pre-season fixtures, mistakes in the opening league game immediately have competitive consequences.
2. Three important players could be missing
Zamalek also face concerns over Juan Bezerra, Chico Banza and Abdullah Al-Saeed.
Bezerra is dealing with a dispute surrounding his future and his desire to leave the club. Banza was late to join the training camp, while Al-Saeed is involved in a disagreement with the club’s management over his contract and reportedly wants to terminate his deal.
The potential absence of all three would significantly reduce Zamalek’s options.
Bezerra was particularly influential last season, contributing to 20 goals – eight goals and 12 assists – in 45 appearances. No other Zamalek player registered more combined goals and assists.
Nasser Mansi and Uday Al-Dabbagh each recorded 15 goal contributions, while Ahmed Sharif finished with seven.
Bezerra’s absence would therefore remove one of Zamalek’s main attacking outlets.
Al-Saeed’s potential absence would create a different problem. His importance extends beyond goals and assists, with the midfielder contributing to the construction of attacks, chance creation, possession and connections between different areas of the pitch.
His ability to help Zamalek play out from the back could also prove important if Al-Ittihad attempt to press their opponents and disrupt their build-up.
Banza provides another attacking option that Zamalek could miss. His pace and ability to affect matches could have made him particularly useful from the bench against tiring opponents.
Even if the situations involving Bezerra and Al-Saeed are resolved before the match, their participation cannot necessarily be guaranteed. Neither player would have completed a full preparation programme with the squad.
Zamalek may therefore have to find alternative solutions immediately, despite needing a strong start to their title defence.
3. Hamza El-Gamal has experience against Zamalek
The third challenge comes from the opposing dugout.
Al-Ittihad coach Hamza El-Gamal already has a record of success against Zamalek.
While in charge of Enppi last season, El-Gamal guided his team to a 1-0 victory over Zamalek. Their other meeting during the championship stage ended 0-0.
That meant Zamalek failed to beat El-Gamal in either of their encounters last season.
His record against the White Knights extends further back. During the 2022-23 season, when he was managing Ismaily, El-Gamal also secured a victory against Zamalek.
His previous results suggest he has found ways to restrict Zamalek and prevent them from imposing their game.
That experience could be particularly valuable in an opening fixture, when preparation and tactical discipline can be decisive.
Zamalek’s record offers encouragement
Despite those concerns, Zamalek have a significant historical advantage over Al-Ittihad.
In Egyptian league meetings, Zamalek have won 74 times compared with nine victories for Al-Ittihad, while 26 matches have ended in draws.
Zamalek have scored 184 goals against their opponents and conceded 59.
Their recent record is even stronger.
Zamalek have not lost to Al-Ittihad in the Egyptian league since the 2017-18 season, when they were beaten 2-1.
Since then, the clubs have met 14 times in the league, with Zamalek winning 11 and drawing three.
Last season’s meeting ended with Zamalek securing a 1-0 victory at Cairo Stadium.
That record means Zamalek enter Friday’s game as favourites on historical evidence.
However, their recent dominance does not remove the questions surrounding their current preparation.
The champions must overcome a limited pre-season, potential absences of key players and an Al-Ittihad coach who has previously demonstrated an ability to frustrate them.
For Zamalek, the opening match will therefore be about more than simply collecting three points. It will provide an early indication of whether the champions are ready to defend their title under difficult circumstances.
