Rising Stellenbosch midfielder Mthiyane earns praise amid growing transfer interest

Stellenbosch FC chief executive Rob Benadie has commended the swift development of midfielder Mthetheleli Mthiyane, who has emerged as a key player for the club since joining at the beginning of the current season.

The 25-year-old, who previously played in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, was recruited after impressing the club’s scouting team. His transition to top-flight football has been notably smooth, with Mthiyane establishing himself as a regular presence in midfield.

Since his arrival, he has featured in 32 matches across all competitions and found the net once, underlining his growing importance to the team. His performances have not only strengthened Stellenbosch’s midfield but have also begun to attract wider attention.

Benadie attributed much of the player’s success to both his natural ability and the club’s recruitment strategy, highlighting the work done behind the scenes to identify and secure his signing.

The CEO indicated that the club had monitored Mthiyane closely before bringing him in, a decision he now considers highly successful.

“Mthiyane, as you know, he’s in his first season in the PSL with us. We scouted him, we watched him for a while, but that was a very good recruitment,” said Benadie.

The form of Mthiyane has also been recognised beyond club level, having recently been included in a preliminary national team squad. This recognition reflects his rapid rise and suggests his performances have not gone unnoticed on a broader stage.

“He was part of the [Bafana Bafana] preliminary squad now, wasn’t he? He’s getting some recognition,” Benadie added.

Despite his strong start, the Stellenbosch executive stressed that Mthiyane is still developing and has significant room for improvement. With relatively limited experience in the Premier Soccer League, the club believes his best performances are yet to come.

“Internally, we believe he’s an excellent player but he can improve a lot. Really, he hasn’t even played 20 PSL games yet, so you can imagine how the boy can still improve,” he said.

Reports have suggested that other clubs may be monitoring the midfielder’s progress, raising the possibility of transfer interest. However, Benadie confirmed that no official bids have been received so far.

“There’s no specific offers for him at this stage. But playing in that position, doing so well, I’m sure there will be offers in the future,” he said.

While acknowledging the likelihood of future interest, Stellenbosch are keen to keep hold of the player as he continues his development. The club views him as a long-term asset and hopes to see him grow further within their system before considering any potential moves.

The rise of Mthiyane from second-tier football to becoming a central figure in Stellenbosch’s midfield highlights both his individual progress and the effectiveness of the club’s recruitment approach.

As the season continues, attention is likely to remain on the midfielder as he builds on an already promising start to life in the top division.
