Spain coach urges respect for CAF decision in 2025 AFCON title dispute

Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has called for calm and respect following the controversial decision to award the Africa Cup of Nations (2025 AFCON) title to Morocco.

The ruling, delivered by the Confederation of African Football Appeals Board, saw the title reassigned from Senegal to Morocco, sparking widespread debate across African football.

Speaking as reported by Foot Mercato, de la Fuente acknowledged the emotional weight of the situation but insisted that official decisions must be respected.

“If I were Senegal, I would be furious, but if I were Morocco, I would be delighted,” he said.

“Let those who have to make the decisions make them. We, the professionals, must simply respect and accept the rules. These are decisions made by the competent authorities, and we must respect them.”

His comments come amid escalating tensions surrounding the decision, which has not only divided opinion but also triggered potential legal consequences. Morocco has already taken a firm stance in defending its position as the recognised champions.

Ahead of a planned trophy presentation ceremony in Stade de France, Moroccan representatives issued formal warnings to organisers, arguing that any event based on a revoked title could carry legal implications. The move followed Senegal’s intention to publicly present the trophy despite the ruling.

The dispute stems from a final decision by CAF’s Appeals Jury in March 2026, which reassigned the title to Morocco. In the absence of a suspensive ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the decision remains in effect, though it continues to be challenged in public discourse.

The controversy has also been fuelled by misinformation circulating online. Yacine Idriss Diallo, president of the Ivorian Football Federation, was forced to publicly deny false statements attributed to him regarding the issue, describing them as “pure manipulation” and urging fans to rely on official sources.

Beyond the legal and administrative dimensions, the situation has raised broader concerns about governance within CAF. Questions have emerged about decision-making processes and transparency, particularly following a series of contentious developments involving continental competitions.

De la Fuente’s intervention adds an external perspective to the debate, reinforcing the view that, regardless of differing opinions, the authority of governing bodies must be upheld.

As the situation continues to unfold, the 2025 AFCON title dispute remains one of the most significant controversies in African football, with potential implications for the credibility and governance of the continental body.
