Sofyan Amrabat returns to the Netherlands as Ajax secure experienced Morocco midfielder

Ajax have reached an agreement to sign Morocco international Sofyan Amrabat on a free transfer after his contract with Fenerbahce was terminated.

The 30-year-old midfielder has signed a deal with the Amsterdam club that took immediate effect and will run until 30 June 2028.

Ajax announced the move during the current summer transfer window, strengthening their midfield with a player who has extensive experience in both domestic and international football.

“Welcoming our newest addition. Happy to have you at Ajax, Sofyan Amrabat! 🇲🇦” the club said in a social media post confirming his arrival.

Amrabat began his professional career at Utrecht before continuing his development in the Netherlands with Feyenoord. He then moved abroad and went on to represent Club Brugge, Hellas Verona, Fiorentina, Manchester United and Fenerbahce.

During the previous season, Amrabat played in Spain for Real Betis. He has also recently represented Morocco at a third World Cup, underlining his long-standing role at international level.

Ajax head coach Jordi Cruyff said the club had identified Amrabat as the type of player they wanted to bring into the squad.

“We are very happy that we have been able to sign Sofyan. He is physically strong and has great ability on the ball, while also possessing extensive international experience. In addition, he knows the Dutch league well, so we expect him to adapt quickly. By signing him, we are getting exactly the type of player we were looking for,” Cruyff said.

Amrabat’s return to the Netherlands gives Ajax a midfielder familiar with the country’s football and league, having started his career at Utrecht and later played for Feyenoord. His subsequent spells in Belgium, Italy, England, Turkey and Spain have added to his experience across several major European competitions.

The move also brings his time with Fenerbahce to an end following the termination of his contract with the Turkish club. Ajax have therefore completed the signing without paying a transfer fee, while securing Amrabat’s services through the end of the 2027-28 season.

His career has included a prominent spell at Fiorentina, followed by a period with Manchester United, before he joined Fenerbahce. Last season, he continued his career in Spain with Real Betis.

Ajax have presented Amrabat as a player capable of contributing with both his physical qualities and his ability in possession. Cruyff also highlighted the midfielder’s knowledge of the Dutch competition as a factor that could help him settle quickly at the club.

The Morocco international is now under contract at Ajax until 30 June 2028, completing his return to Dutch football after a career that has taken him across several of Europe’s leading leagues.
