Simon Adingra will spend the 2026-27 season with Ajax after completing a loan move from Sunderland, with the Eredivisie club holding an option to sign the winger permanently for a reported €15.9m (£13.7m).
The Netherlands side will also pay a reported loan fee of €3.8m (£3.3m) for the 24-year-old, whose transfer was confirmed on Wednesday.
Adingra returned to Sunderland for pre-season after completing the second half of the previous campaign on loan at Monaco. However, he was unable to establish himself in Regis Le Bris’ team and made only a limited contribution before moving on again.
In total, the Ivory Coast international made 15 appearances for Sunderland in all competitions. Ten of those outings were starts, but he scored only once during his time at the Stadium of Light.
Adingra moved to Monaco in February and played 17 matches for the Ligue 1 club. He finished that spell with five goal involvements, scoring three times and providing two assists.
Monaco had the opportunity to make the transfer permanent during the summer, but chose not to take up that option. As a result, Adingra returned to England before Ajax agreed a deal to take him to the Netherlands.
A possible move to Championship club West Ham had been reported earlier in the summer. That prospect was affected when Adingra suffered an injury during pre-season.
The forward remains sidelined, although he is expected to return to action in the coming weeks now that his move to Ajax has been completed.
Adingra becomes Ajax’s 11th signing of the summer. Among the other players to arrive at the club are Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Sofyan Amrabat, Julian Brandt and Marcos Leonardo.
Ajax have made a positive start to their Eredivisie campaign, taking seven points from their first three matches. Their next league fixture is against rivals PSV on Saturday.
While Adingra has left Sunderland, fellow forward Jocelin Ta Bi will remain with the Black Cats after his proposed loan move to Championship side Burnley broke down late on deadline day.
Sunderland did manage to add to their attacking options before the transfer window closed, though. They beat Premier League rivals Crystal Palace to the signing of Malick Fofana from Lyon in the final hours of the window.
