Sierra Leone have appointed French coach Didier Gomes Da Rosa as the new head coach of the Leone Stars, handing the national team reins to one of the most travelled and experienced managers in African football.
The 56-year-old arrives with an extensive coaching résumé spanning more than two decades across Africa, the Middle East and Asia, as Sierra Leone seek to strengthen their standing on the continental stage and build momentum for future international competitions.
Gomes Da Rosa’s appointment was confirmed by the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA), which highlighted his vast experience working with both club and national teams across several countries.
The Frenchman most recently gained attention for guiding Botswana through an impressive qualifying campaign for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, a performance that enhanced his reputation as a coach capable of delivering results with developing football nations.
According to details released by the SLFA, Gomes Da Rosa holds both UEFA A Licence and AFC Pro Licence coaching qualifications and has accumulated more than 450 matches in Africa and Asia during his managerial career. Of those, 70 have come at international level.
His coaching journey has taken him across some of the continent’s most recognisable clubs. Previous appointments include spells with Rayon Sports in Rwanda, Cameroon’s Coton Sport, Tanzanian giants Simba SC, Sudanese powerhouse Al-Merrikh, Guinea’s Horoya AC and Ethiopian Coffee. He has also managed clubs and national teams in Mauritania, Botswana, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
The new Leone Stars boss brings a strong record of silverware, having won five league titles, five domestic cup competitions and a Super Cup during his coaching career.
His achievements also include participation in the FIFA Arab Cup in 2021 and the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in 2022.
One of the standout moments of his recent international coaching career came with Botswana, whom he helped steer towards qualification for the 2025 African Nations Championship, further underlining his credentials in national-team football.
The SLFA described Gomes Da Rosa as a tactically disciplined coach with deep knowledge of African football, pointing to his ability to build competitive teams and navigate the unique challenges of international competition.
Fluent in French, English and Spanish, the Frenchman is also known for embracing modern coaching methods, including video analysis, GPS tracking systems and data-driven performance assessment.
His arrival comes at a significant moment for Sierra Leone football as the Leone Stars look to establish greater consistency in continental competitions and continue their development following recent years of progress on the international stage.
