Sekhukhune United have parted company with head coach Cedric Kaze by mutual agreement, bringing his short spell at the Betway Premiership club to an immediate end after five official matches.
The announcement comes only days after Sekhukhune were knocked out of the MTN8 by Orlando Pirates, losing 3-0 in the second leg of their semi-final tie.
Kaze was serving a touchline suspension for that match, meaning assistant coach Paulus Masehe took charge from the technical area as Orlando Pirates completed the victory.
Sekhukhune confirmed Kaze’s departure in an official statement, saying the decision had been reached with immediate effect. The club thanked the former Kaizer Chiefs coach for his dedication, professionalism and contribution during his time in charge, and wished him success in his future endeavours.
Kaze leaves with a record of two wins and three defeats from five official matches.
His tenure began with a 1-0 Betway Premiership victory against Durban City. That result was followed by a 2-0 defeat by Kaizer Chiefs, before Sekhukhune responded with a 2-0 win over Polokwane City.
The club then lost 1-0 to Orlando Pirates in the first leg of their MTN8 semi-final. A further 2-0 domestic defeat by the Buccaneers left Kaze with three losses from his five matches in charge.
The latest coaching change represents a significant early-season decision for Sekhukhune, who have moved quickly to restructure their technical team and seek greater stability.
Zothwane takes charge
Sekhukhune have appointed Papi Zothwane as their new head coach as part of the immediate transition. He will be assisted by Masehe, who had taken responsibility on the touchline during the MTN8 defeat by Orlando Pirates.
Nascent Nkhwashu will remain in his position as goalkeeper coach.
The club said the new technical team would prioritise stability, continuity and a smooth transition as Babina Noko prepare for the challenges ahead.
Zothwane’s appointment comes at a crucial point in the Betway Premiership campaign, with Sekhukhune hoping the revised coaching structure can produce a positive response on the pitch.
Kaze’s departure is the latest major managerial change in the division. Sekhukhune will now look to the new leadership team to provide direction after a difficult start and to help the club move forward following their MTN8 elimination.
The club did not provide further details about the terms of the agreement that ended Kaze’s tenure. Its statement instead focused on thanking the coach for his work and outlining the responsibilities of the newly appointed technical team.
