Lionel Scaloni broke down in tears in his hometown of Pujato as hundreds of Argentina fans pleaded with him not to step down as national team coach following the 2026 World Cup final defeat by Spain.
The 2022 World Cup‐winning manager was given a hero’s welcome in the small town in Santa Fe province, but the celebrations quickly turned emotional as he spoke publicly for the first time back home about the pain of losing the final.
Scaloni, who had also cried in the post‐match press conference after the defeat, admitted the loss in the United States was still raw and that he remains undecided over his future, with his contract due to expire in December.
Emotional return to Pujato
Residents of Pujato turned out in large numbers to greet their most famous son on his return from the World Cup, gathering in the streets and at a local event held in his honour.
But as applause and chants rang out, the Argentina coach could not hold back his emotions when the conversation turned to the final against Spain.
Quoted by Spanish newspaper AS on Tuesday, Scaloni said: “لم ننجح في الفوز. نحن نعلم اننا نلعب من اجل اسعاد شعبنا، ولهذا السبب يكون الالم كبيرا”.
The 46‐year‐old, who guided Argentina to Copa America glory in 2021 and the World Cup title in Qatar the following year, acknowledged that Spain had been superior on the day.
“In some الاحيان تفوز، وفي احيان اخرى تخسر. علينا ان نعترف بان اسبانيا لعبت بشكل افضل، وهذا يجعلنا افضل ايضا”، he added, in a candid message that underlined his respect for the new world champions.
‘We fought until the end’
Scaloni insisted his players had given everything, even as Spain controlled large parts of the final.
He said: “الاحساس واحد دايما، وهو اننا نقاتل حتى النهاية عندما لا تسير الامور كما نريد. يجب ان ندرك كارجنتينيين ان المنافس يلعب ايضا، وقد يكون افضل منك، لكننا رغم ذلك جعلنا المهمة صعبة عليه”.
His remarks reflect a theme that has run through his tenure – that Argentina must combine their traditional fighting spirit with an acknowledgment of the quality of their opponents.
Despite the disappointment of losing the 2026 final, Argentina’s run under Scaloni over the past five years has been the most successful period for the national team since the Diego Maradona era, crowned by Lionel Messi lifting the World Cup in 2022.
Future in doubt as contract nears end
Scaloni’s deal with the Argentine Football Association is set to run out in December, and his emotional statements both after the final and upon his return home have fuelled speculation that he could walk away at the end of the year.
He has not yet given a definitive answer on whether he plans to continue beyond his current contract, leaving fans and players in suspense over the future direction of the world champions of 2022.
“انا مستمر حتى ديسمبر، وسنواصل القتال”، Scaloni said in Pujato, hinting that he intends to honour the remainder of his agreement but stopping short of any long‐term commitment.
His comments echo the uncertainty he expressed in the immediate aftermath of the defeat by Spain, when he suggested he needed time to reflect on what would come next for him and for the team.
Fans chant: ‘Leo will not leave!’
During the reception in his hometown, supporters made their feelings clear, repeatedly chanting: “ليو لن يرحل!” in an appeal for Scaloni to stay on as head coach.
The scenes in Pujato underline how deeply the former defender has come to be loved in Argentina, not only for the trophies he has delivered but for the identity and resilience he has instilled in the national side.
For now, all options remain open regarding whether Scaloni will renew his contract or choose to close a chapter that has brought Argentina a Copa America title, a Finalissima triumph, and a World Cup – before ending, at least for the moment, in tears after a final lost to Spain.
