Miami has emerged as the leading candidate to host the 2027 Spanish Super Cup, with Istanbul and Qatar also under consideration after Saudi Arabia’s chances of staging the competition appeared to diminish.
The tournament is expected to take place in February, with the United States city currently regarded as the preferred destination for the 43rd edition. The Spanish Football Federation is considering alternative venues because the event would coincide with the Asian Cup if it were held in Saudi Arabia.
According to Spanish newspaper AS, the federation’s options are led by Miami, followed by Istanbul, with Qatar currently viewed as the third possibility.
A delegated committee is due to discuss the most suitable host venue on Thursday. Miami is considered the strongest candidate ahead of Istanbul, while Qatar remains among the alternatives being assessed.
The Spanish Super Cup has been staged outside Spain since 2018, apart from the 2021 edition, which was moved to Morocco because of the coronavirus pandemic. The competition was subsequently transferred to Saudi Arabia, which has hosted recent editions.
Miami had previously been proposed as the venue for the Spanish Women’s Super Cup. However, Rafael Louzan, president of the Spanish Football Federation, ruled out that option after one of the participating clubs rejected the proposal.
The four clubs involved in the 2027 competition Barcelona, Real Madrid, Real Sociedad and Atletico Madrid have been informed about all the organisational steps connected with the tournament.
The competition will be played as a four-team knockout event. Copa del Rey winners Real Sociedad will face league runners-up Real Madrid in one semi-final.
The other match will feature league champions Barcelona against Copa del Rey runners-up Atletico Madrid.
The eventual winner of the venue process would therefore host two semi-finals and the final, with the tournament continuing the Spanish federation’s policy of taking the Super Cup abroad.
Saudi Arabia’s possible absence would represent a change from the recent pattern, but the federation is now examining several international locations before making its decision. Miami’s position at the head of the list means the tournament could be held in the United States, although Istanbul and Qatar remain active contenders while the final choice is considered.
