The South African Football Association (SAFA) has reportedly doubled its initial salary offer to Pitso Mosimane as it attempts to appoint him as the next Bafana Bafana coach.
Mosimane had rejected an initial package worth R5 million a year, despite being the leading candidate to succeed Hugo Broos, who has retired from his position.
The improved offer follows a meeting of SAFA’s National Executive Committee (NEC) at SAFA House on Saturday, where the appointment of Mosimane was approved, according to SABC Sport.
“SABC Sport understands that the South African Football Association (SAFA) have doubled the initial package that was offered to Pitso Mosimane last week, following the SAFA National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting at SAFA House on Saturday that approved the appointment of Mosimane to succeed Hugo Broos,” reports SABC Sport.
The 61-year-old Mosimane is now expected to return for a second spell in charge of the South Africa national team. He previously managed Bafana Bafana before moving on to other roles in club football.
SAFA’s initial offer was made after its technical committee identified Mosimane as the preferred candidate to replace Broos. The Belgian coach had been earning about R1.4 million per year before his departure.
Broos was also awarded a R21 million payment after Bafana Bafana returned from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. During his tenure, South Africa reached the knockout stages of the tournament for the first time in the country’s history.
The revised proposal represents a significant increase on the offer Mosimane initially turned down. The former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly coach had been earning R1.5 million per month at Sundowns before his controversial move to Al Ahly in 2020.
His previous salary is understood to have influenced his decision to reject the original R5 million-a-year package, which was viewed as inadequate despite it being higher than Broos’ annual earnings.
“As the SAFA Technical Committee led by Jack Maluleke had finalized their recommendation and identified Mosimane as their target to replace the former head coach, SAFA senior executives visited the former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly head coach to work towards finalizing his deal.”
SAFA’s discussions with Mosimane are therefore focused on completing the agreement and confirming the experienced coach as Broos’ successor.
Mosimane has built a strong reputation through his success with Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly, and his possible return would mark a major change in the national team’s leadership following Broos’ departure.
The South African Football Association has not publicly confirmed the final value of the revised offer, but the reported doubling of the original package indicates its determination to secure Mosimane’s services.
