Real Madrid could make an unexpected move for Juventus captain Manuel Locatelli after their efforts to sign Rodri reportedly stalled, with the Manchester City midfielder now seemingly closer to joining Barcelona.
Locatelli was not previously regarded as one of Real Madrid’s expected targets during the current transfer window. However, the Spanish club is considering alternatives to strengthen its midfield and has been linked with a move for the Juventus midfielder.
The potential interest, described as surprising, has emerged as reports suggest Rodri’s future is moving away from Real Madrid and towards Barcelona. According to Football Italia, the club is assessing several midfield options after its pursuit of Rodri encountered difficulties.
Locatelli is understood to be among the names being considered. The report also says manager Jose Mourinho views the Italy international as one possible solution for strengthening the centre of the pitch.
A move would represent a significant change in direction for the 27-year-old, who remains an important player for Juventus and wears the captain’s armband. The prospect of his departure has already prompted debate among the club’s supporters, with differing views over his performances and his importance to the team.
For Juventus, interest from Real Madrid or another major club could arrive at a useful moment. The Italian side needs to generate funds to continue reshaping its squad during the transfer window.
Juventus are keen to improve their midfield, but recognise that further spending will require income from player sales. The club has already brought in Randal Kolo Muani and Karim Alajbegovic, increasing the need to strike a balance between adding to the squad and allowing some players to leave.
That situation could make Locatelli’s departure possible if a suitable offer is submitted.
Locatelli joined Juventus in 2021 and has made 230 appearances for the club. He has also regained his place in the Italy national team.
His market value is estimated at between 25m and 30m euros, although his contract gives Juventus a strong position in any negotiations. Locatelli extended his agreement with the club until 2030 in April, meaning Juventus are under no pressure to sell him for a reduced fee.
Real Madrid would therefore need to present a convincing proposal if they decide to pursue the deal.
Uncertainty is not limited to Locatelli among Juventus’ midfielders. Several players could leave Turin during the current transfer window as the club considers how best to reshape its squad and fund new arrivals.
Teun Koopmeiners is one of the most prominent names linked with a possible exit. He has not fully delivered the level expected since joining Juventus in a deal worth more than 50m euros.
Newcastle have shown serious interest in signing Koopmeiners, whose current market value is estimated at about 30m euros. His sale is therefore one option being considered by the Juventus hierarchy.
Fabio Miretti has also been linked with a move away. Lazio are examining the possibility of taking the midfielder on loan with an option to buy.
Meanwhile, Napoli, managed by Massimiliano Allegri, remain interested in Juventus defender Federico Gatti.
The developments underline the scale of the potential changes facing Juventus this summer. While the club attempts to strengthen its squad, it may need to sacrifice some established players to finance new signings. Locatelli could consequently find himself moving from club captain to unexpected Real Madrid target if the Spanish side decides to act decisively.
