Tottenham Hotspur have signed Scotland captain Andrew Robertson on a free transfer after the defender’s contract with Liverpool expired, in a major move designed to stabilise a club that came perilously close to relegation last season.
The 32-year-old left-back, who spent nine trophy-laden years at Anfield, was unveiled by Spurs on Thursday after completing pre-season tests and beginning training with his new team-mates in north London.
Tottenham confirmed the deal in a statement on their official website, highlighting Robertson’s rapid integration into Ange Postecoglou’s squad.
“After captaining Scotland at the recent World Cup finals in the United States, Mexico and Canada, the full-back began his journey with Tottenham this week by joining us for the first time at Hotspur Way,” the club said.
They added: “The defender, who joined us following the expiry of his contract with Liverpool at the beginning of the month, has been settling into the N17 area this week, meeting his new team-mates and beginning pre-season tests and training.”
According to specialist transfer website Transfermarkt, Robertson has signed a contract with Spurs running until June 2030, underlining the club’s long-term faith in a player regarded among the Premier League’s most consistent full-backs of the past decade.
From Anfield stalwart to Spurs lynchpin
Robertson’s move brings to an end a celebrated spell at Liverpool, where he arrived in 2017 from Hull City and became a cornerstone of Jurgen Klopp’s side.
During his nine seasons at Anfield, the Scotland international helped the club to a Premier League title, Champions League triumph and multiple domestic and international honours, forging a renowned partnership on the left flank and earning a reputation for relentless energy, creativity and leadership.
