Rennes are making a late attempt to sign Senegal international Boulaye Dia from Lazio as the French club look to strengthen their attack before the transfer window closes.
The Ligue 1 side are in active negotiations over a possible move for the 29-year-old centre-forward, with Ouest-France reporting that talks are underway.
Rennes are looking for additional attacking options as they prepare for a campaign that will include both Ligue 1 and the Europa League.
Rennes seeking attacking reinforcement
Rennes already have Estéban Lepaul among their attacking options but want greater depth following the departure of Switzerland international Breel Embolo.
The club have also brought in Issa Soumaré and Eliezer Mayenda, although the pair have yet to fully establish themselves in the team.
Dia’s experience in French football has therefore made him an attractive option as Rennes search for an established forward capable of contributing immediately.
Dia’s difficult season at Lazio
The Senegal international is coming off a frustrating campaign with Lazio.
Dia made only 14 starts for the Italian club last season and registered three goal contributions, limiting his impact in Rome.
A move back to France could provide him with the opportunity to rediscover his form and secure more consistent first-team football.
Dia is already familiar with Ligue 1, having previously played for Reims, where he established himself before moving to Salernitana and eventually Lazio.
Lazio already considering replacement
Dia’s potential departure could also force Lazio to act quickly in the transfer market.
The Italian club have reportedly identified Moroccan striker Yanis Begraoui of Estoril as a potential replacement.
However, that move is understood to be linked to Dia’s departure, meaning Lazio’s attacking plans could depend on whether Rennes succeed in completing the deal.
With the transfer deadline approaching, Rennes now face a race against time to reach an agreement with Lazio.
For Dia, the move would represent an opportunity to return to France and revive his career after a difficult season in Italy, while Rennes would gain an experienced Senegal international as they prepare for a demanding domestic and European campaign.
