Real Madrid do not intend to sign a replacement for Rodri Hernandez after the Manchester City midfielder turned down a move to the Spanish club, according to COPE.
The Madrid club believe their existing squad is strong enough to complete the season without adding another player in central midfield. Jose Mourinho is expected to use Bernardo Silva in the position, with other members of the squad available to provide cover when required.
Real Madrid were informed of Rodri’s decision in advance. The player contacted the club’s leadership to make clear that he preferred to join Barcelona instead.
That decision has reportedly frustrated Real Madrid, who believe they had earned the right to be considered seriously. The club made the first offer to Rodri after the World Cup, but the midfielder ultimately opted for a move to Barcelona.
Despite missing out on the player, Real Madrid have decided not to pursue another midfielder. Their view is that the current group can provide enough depth and flexibility in the centre of the pitch, with Silva regarded as the main option and other players capable of supporting him.
The situation leaves Barcelona negotiating directly with Manchester City. Barcelona have already reached an agreement with Rodri over a transfer, but a deal between the two clubs has not yet been completed.
Manchester City have rejected Barcelona’s opening proposal, which was worth 45m euros. Further discussions are expected as the Catalan club attempts to reach an agreement with the Premier League side.
For Real Madrid, however, the focus has shifted away from finding an alternative to Rodri. The club’s decision reflects its belief that a further signing is unnecessary, even though its preferred target is set to join a domestic rival.
Rodri’s choice has therefore affected the transfer plans of all three clubs. Barcelona have secured an understanding with the player but must still convince Manchester City to sell, while Manchester City have already turned down the first bid. Real Madrid, after making the initial approach following the World Cup, have accepted that Rodri will not be moving to the capital and do not plan to return to the market for another player in his position.
COPE’s report indicates that Madrid’s decision is based on confidence in the squad rather than a renewed attempt to compete for Rodri’s signature. Mourinho will instead work with the players already available, with Silva expected to take on added responsibility and cover provided by other midfield options.
