Former England footballer Raheem Sterling has been charged following a car crash in May involving his Lamborghini, with police alleging dangerous driving, the use of “laughing gas” and refusing to undergo a medical examination.
The incident involved Sterling’s Lamborghini, reportedly worth about €315,000, colliding with a motorway barrier. No-one was injured in the crash.
Sterling is due to appear in court in September. If convicted, he could receive a prison sentence of up to two years.
Police said the charges relate to three separate allegations: dangerous driving, consuming nitrous oxide – commonly known as laughing gas – and refusing a medical examination.
The allegations have been reported by Goal. Sterling has not been found guilty of any offence, and the case will be considered by the court at the hearing in September.
Sterling, who previously represented England, joined Chelsea from Manchester City in 2022. He later spent a season on loan at Arsenal before moving to Feyenoord.
His agreement with the Dutch club ended this summer.
The crash caused damage to the vehicle after it struck the motorway barrier, but the source report said there were no injuries as a result of the incident. The court proceedings will determine the outcome of the accusations brought by police.
Sterling began his recent career sequence at Chelsea after leaving Manchester City in 2022. Following his time with Chelsea, he spent a season with Arsenal on loan and then played for Feyenoord. His spell with the Netherlands club concluded this summer.
The September hearing will therefore take place after the end of Sterling’s agreement with Feyenoord. The potential maximum sentence mentioned in the case is two years in prison, although any decision will rest with the court after the allegations have been examined.
Nitrous oxide is referred to in the report as “laughing gas”. Police have included its alleged use among the charges alongside the claims relating to Sterling’s driving and his refusal to complete a medical examination.
No other injuries were reported after the Lamborghini collided with the motorway barrier. The vehicle’s stated value was approximately €315,000.
Sterling remains entitled to a fair hearing, and the charges are allegations until proven in court.
