Ugo Raghouber scored his first Burnley goal as the Clarets came from behind to draw 1-1 with Middlesbrough and claim only their second point from their opening four Championship matches.
The French midfielder, who joined Burnley from Lille in July, levelled nine minutes after half-time. He collected Zeki Amdouni’s pass, was given time to run towards the Middlesbrough penalty area and calmly guided his finish into the corner from just outside the box.
Middlesbrough had taken the lead through Aidan Morris, who marked his first goal for the club in more than two years with an impressive strike in the 23rd minute. The American midfielder was found by fellow countryman Sebastian Berhalter before sweeping the ball into the net from 20 yards.
The result provided some encouragement for Burnley after a difficult week. Head coach Nicky Hayen had seen his side beaten 4-1 by Norwich last Saturday and was also forced to adjust his attacking options after last season’s leading scorer, Zian Flemming, joined Ipswich for £20m late on transfer deadline day.
Hayen selected Andreas Hountondji from the start, giving the forward his first Burnley starting appearance since November 2024 after he had spent the previous season and a half on loan.
Middlesbrough threatened early. In the third minute, leading scorer Will Lankshear raced on to a long clearance from goalkeeper Radek Vitek after Burnley defender Hjalmar Ekdal failed to track the ball. However, Lankshear could only bundle his effort wide as Burnley goalkeeper Max Weiss advanced to narrow the angle.
Vitek was also required to intervene shortly afterwards, pushing away a 20-yard effort from Dastan Satpayev. The Chelsea loanee, making his home debut, had created the opportunity after combining with Amdouni.
Morris then gave Middlesbrough the advantage with a composed finish, prompting the visiting supporters to celebrate with chants of “USA, USA” – a familiar sound at the club’s matches this season, with Morris one of four Americans in the squad.
The contest carried a physical intensity. Vitek reacted angrily after being caught by Satpayev while attempting to collect a back pass, while Lankshear was shown a yellow card for standing on Hannibal Mejbri’s foot.
Middlesbrough came close to doubling their lead before the interval. Two minutes before half-time, a loose clearance by Connor Roberts fell to Morris, who advanced before striking the left-hand post from 25 yards.
Lankshear then escaped Anel Ahmedhodzic after Kyle Joseph flicked Adilson Malanda’s pass into his path. His low cross reached Riley McGree, but the midfielder stretched and sent his six-yard effort wide.
Burnley improved following the restart and found their equaliser through Raghouber’s controlled finish. The goal gave the hosts renewed momentum, although Middlesbrough soon threatened again.
Satpayev produced another eye-catching run, driving at Alfie Jones before twisting inside the Middlesbrough centre-back. His sliding attempt was kept out by Vitek’s trailing leg after the goalkeeper had been wrong-footed.
Burnley pushed for a winning goal late on, with substitute Aaron Ramsey sending a shot narrowly wide with 12 minutes remaining. They were unable to find a second, however, and both sides had to settle for a point.
