A number of Premier League and European clubs are considering an approach for Borussia Dortmund’s director of scouting and recruiting, Sebastian Krug, whose work has helped identify several of the club’s most valuable recent signings.
Krug played a significant part in Dortmund’s recruitment of Erling Haaland, Jude Bellingham, Jadon Sancho and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens. Those players have since generated about £300m in transfer income for the Bundesliga club.
He was also closely involved in Dortmund’s decision to sign Jobe Bellingham from Sunderland last summer, extending the club’s established policy of targeting leading young English players.
Krug has been influential in identifying both Bellingham brothers at an early stage of their careers and has developed a close relationship with their family over several years.
The Bellingham family are understood to keep their football contacts deliberately limited. Krug remains in regular communication with their father, Mark Bellingham, as part of that long-standing relationship.
His role at the centre of Dortmund’s talent-identification operation has strengthened his standing among senior figures in the Premier League. Executives at some of England’s biggest clubs are understood to exchange views with Krug regularly on recruitment planning, the assessment of young players and wider trends within football.
Krug’s reputation has also grown in Serie A, where he has been involved in recruiting some of Italy’s most promising young talents.
After nearly 10 years with Dortmund, there is an increasing belief that Krug could be ready to move into a new stage of his career. His next appointment is thought most likely to come outside Germany, with a move to the Premier League a potential option.
Dortmund’s recent transfer strategy has brought considerable financial and sporting rewards. Haaland, Bellingham, Sancho and Bynoe-Gittens were all players whose development or recruitment formed part of the club’s wider model of identifying elite young talent before their market value increased significantly.
Krug’s involvement in that process, alongside his work on the arrival of Jobe Bellingham from Sunderland, has made him an attractive figure to clubs looking to improve their scouting and recruitment structures.
The interest from the Premier League comes as several clubs continue to place greater emphasis on early identification, international networks and the recruitment of players with significant long-term potential. Krug’s experience at Dortmund, his links with the Bellingham family and his contacts across European football are understood to have contributed to the growing attention surrounding him.
For now, Krug remains part of Dortmund’s recruitment operation. However, after almost a decade at the club, the possibility of a move abroad appears to be gaining momentum, with Premier League clubs among those monitoring his situation.
