Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns will contest what supporters are already describing as a dream MTN8 final, but many fans are urging the Premier Soccer League (PSL) to stage the match somewhere other than Moses Mabhida Stadium.
The final is scheduled for 10 October, with both clubs securing their places in the showpiece this weekend.
Orlando Pirates reached the final with a convincing 4-0 aggregate victory over Sekhukhune United. Mamelodi Sundowns, meanwhile, progressed against Golden Arrows after their semi-final tie finished 3-3 on aggregate. Sundowns advanced on the away-goals rule.
Although attention has quickly turned to the prospect of a high-profile meeting between two of South Africa’s leading clubs, supporters have focused on the choice of venue.
Moses Mabhida Stadium has hosted a number of major cup finals in recent years. Some fans now believe the PSL should move the MTN8 final to another part of the country rather than return to the Durban stadium once again.
Because both Pirates and Sundowns are based in Gauteng, FNB Stadium has become one of the most frequently suggested alternatives. Supporters argue that the Johannesburg venue would offer a more convenient and neutral location, while also giving fans of both clubs a better opportunity to attend in significant numbers.
Mbombela Stadium and Peter Mokaba Stadium have also been proposed as possible venues for the final.
The PSL has not yet confirmed where the 10 October match will be played.
One supporter, @kanyane23, called on the league to select FNB Stadium, writing: “Dear PSL. Please don’t overthink this thing, take this final to FNB Stadium. Let the people of Gauteng witness their teams live in a cup final for a change.”
@Epicurus_H suggested that Durban or Mbombela could still be considered, saying: “I wouldn’t be surprised if Durban or Mbombela host it. If I’m not mistaken those municipalities usually cover all costs such as hotel and flights for the players.”
Another fan, @Nkosi_nathi17, expressed frustration with the repeated use of some venues: “We are tired of the Moses Mabhida and Mbombela final man.”
@mokonemapoma2 also questioned why Durban appears to be selected so regularly, writing: “Moses Mabhida the only province that is guaranteed to host MTN8 final alone kanti?”
The match will bring together two clubs from Gauteng in a final that promises to attract substantial interest across South African football. Pirates’ comfortable semi-final victory and Sundowns’ dramatic progression against Golden Arrows have set up a contest supporters are eager to see.
The remaining question is whether the PSL will continue with its familiar choice of venue or respond to the calls for the MTN8 final to be taken to a different stadium.
