Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen was forced off at half-time with injury as Liverpool produced a commanding performance to eliminate the Turkish side from the UEFA Champions League and progress to the quarter-finals on Wednesday night.
The Nigerian forward’s withdrawal proved a turning point in the tie, with Galatasaray unable to maintain their attacking threat after his departure.
Liverpool capitalised in the second half, turning the contest decisively in their favour at Anfield.
Galatasaray had travelled to England holding a narrow 1-0 advantage from the first leg, but their plans were disrupted early in the match.
Osimhen sustained an injury after being challenged from behind by Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté, leaving him struggling to make an impact.
Despite attempting to continue, the striker was visibly affected and unable to influence the game before being substituted at the interval.
Speaking after the match, Galatasaray manager Okan Buruk confirmed the extent of the issue, saying: “Osimhen is in pain. It happened at the beginning of the match; we tried to keep him on the pitch, but his pain increased, so we had to substitute him at halftime.”
Buruk also voiced frustration with the officiating, suggesting that the challenge which led to the injury had not been adequately addressed by the referee.
“Looking at Osimhen’s position, we saw that Konaté was able to commit these fouls very easily,” he added. “While we were expecting the best referee in the world, perhaps one of the worst referees officiated the game.”
Liverpool had already taken the lead before the break through Dominik Szoboszlai, but it was in the second half that they fully asserted their dominance.
With Galatasaray lacking their main attacking outlet, the home side controlled the tempo and created further opportunities.
Goals from Hugo Ekitike and Ryan Gravenberch extended Liverpool’s advantage, effectively putting the tie beyond reach. Mohamed Salah then added a fourth, bringing the evening to a comprehensive conclusion and marking his 50th goal in the Champions League
The absence of Osimhen was keenly felt, as Galatasaray struggled to retain possession in attacking areas and failed to mount a sustained response. The forward had been in strong form throughout the competition, contributing seven goals and three assists prior to the match.
The result sees Liverpool move into the quarter-finals, where they will face Bayern Munich. Meanwhile, Galatasaray exit the competition and will now turn their attention back to domestic football following their European campaign.
