Orlando Pirates are weighing up a move worth up to R20m for 17-year-old Cape Town City playmaker Emile Witbooi as the newly crowned Betway Premiership champions prepare for a major midfield overhaul next season.
The Johannesburg giants, who recently clinched the league title, are scouting fresh attacking options following several high-profile exits, including that of rising star Relebohile Mofokeng.
Club insiders suggest Witbooi, one of the most highly rated teenagers in South African football, has emerged as a key target – but Cape Town City’s steep valuation means any approach will require careful financial planning from the Soweto side.
Pirates face R20m decision on Witbooi
Despite his small stature and relative inexperience, Witbooi has built a reputation as a technically gifted attacking midfielder with significant long-term potential.
At just 17, and born in 2008, he is seen by City as one of their prized assets. The club has placed what is understood to be a substantial asking price on the youngster, believed to rise to around R20m including add-ons.
That figure would make him one of the more expensive domestic signings in recent seasons if a deal is completed.
While Orlando Pirates are keen to refresh their creative options in the final third, they will need to consider how any transfer is structured, with instalments and performance-related clauses likely to be central to negotiations should they formally move for the player.
Spanish tour showcases Pirates’ emerging talents
As they plan for the 2026-27 campaign, Pirates have already been assessing internal options during their pre-season tour of Spain.
The trip offered a platform to 22-year-old midfielder Simphiwe Masilela, who was handed an opportunity to impress the coaching staff. Known for his technical ability and versatility across central midfield positions, Masilela was seen turning out in the number 38 shirt and is viewed as a candidate to become a fan favourite if he continues to develop.
He was joined on tour by 20-year-old central defender Cristian Derbyshire and 18-year-old midfielder Mpho Padime, another highly regarded youngster in the squad. Both players were given exposure to top-level opposition in the Iberian Peninsula as part of the club’s drive to blend youth with experience in the seasons ahead.
The trio’s involvement underlines Pirates’ intention to look within their own ranks as well as to the transfer market to reshape the squad.

The Buccaneers are expected to take the field next term with a noticeably refreshed side after a number of senior figures moved on from the club.
Among the departures, the exit of Mofokeng stands out as particularly significant, with the young attacker having been one of the most exciting prospects in the league. The champions will begin the defence of their Betway Premiership title on Saturday, 1 August, when they host Milford FC in their opening fixture of the 2026-27 season.
