Nwaiwu revels in “privilege” after debut in Nigeria win

Nigeria defender Chibuike Nwaiwu has spoken of his joy after making his international debut in the Super Eagles’ 2-1 victory over Iran on Friday.

The Trabzonspor player, who was only called up to the squad at short notice, described the occasion as a dream come true following his rapid rise in professional football.

Nwaiwu was drafted into the team after Calvin Bassey withdrew from the international break, receiving his call-up just a day before the match. Despite the late inclusion, he was named among the substitutes by coach Eric Chelle and introduced early in the second half after an injury to Igoh Ogbu.

His appearance marks a significant step in a career that has accelerated quickly in recent years. The defender moved from Nigerian club Enyimba to Turkish side Trabzonspor two years ago and has since established himself as a regular at one of the country’s leading teams.

There had been doubts about whether Nwaiwu would feature in the match, given the timing of his call-up and his club commitments in Turkey, where the friendly was played. However, Chelle opted to include him, giving the defender an opportunity to prove himself on the international stage.

Nwaiwu initially struggled to settle into the game, at times holding on to the ball longer than necessary. But he gradually grew into the contest and contributed as Nigeria held on to secure a 2-1 win against a side known for its consistent appearances at the World Cup.

Speaking after the match, Nwaiwu reflected on his journey from the Nigeria Premier Football League to representing his country at senior level.

“It’s a privilege for me to represent my country; it is the dream of every footballer in the world,” Nwaiwu said.

“I am very happy to be here and to have made my debut today. [Iran] is a very good side that consistently qualifies for the World Cup, but we took our chances and did a great job.”

The victory provided a positive result for Nigeria in the friendly encounter, while also offering an opportunity for new players like Nwaiwu to gain valuable experience.

For the defender, the occasion represents both a personal milestone and the continuation of a journey that has seen him rise swiftly through the ranks of professional football.
