A defender for Rangers F.C., Emmanuel Fernandez, has been named in the PFA Scotland Premiership Team of the Year after a strong first season in Scottish football.
The 24-year-old, who joined Rangers from Peterborough United during the summer transfer window, has been recognised for his performances at the heart of the club’s defence. His inclusion in the league’s best XI reflects his growing influence and consistency throughout the campaign.
Fernandez has played a key role in Rangers’ season, contributing both defensively and offensively. The centre-back scored five league goals and helped his side keep 12 clean sheets, underlining his impact at both ends of the pitch. His presence has been particularly notable in recent matches, where he has maintained defensive stability while also posing a threat during attacking set-pieces.
Although his start to life in Scotland was relatively slow, Fernandez quickly adapted to the demands of the league. Under manager Danny Röhl, he established himself as a regular starter and went on to become one of the team’s most reliable performers.
His club form has also translated onto the international stage. Fernandez earned recognition with the Nigeria national football team, making his debut in a 2-1 win over Iran. He later marked another milestone by scoring his first international goal against Jordaan during the March international window.
At club level, his composure on the ball and ability to build play from the back have strengthened Rangers’ defensive structure. As the season progressed, Fernandez demonstrated improved awareness, positioning and confidence, helping him stand out among defenders in the league.
His performances have placed him alongside fellow defenders Paul McGinn, Craig Halkett and Harry Milne in the Premiership Team of the Year, highlighting the level he has reached in a relatively short period.
Fernandez’s rise over the course of the season points to a player developing rapidly at both domestic and international levels. His contributions have not only strengthened Rangers’ campaign but have also established him as a dependable option for Nigeria.
With his debut season now capped by individual recognition, Fernandez’s trajectory suggests he could continue to play an increasingly important role for both club and country in the coming years.
