Nigeria boosted by captain Ndidi’s arrival before Iran clash

Nigeria’s Super Eagles squad is now complete following Ndidi’s arrival in Antalya, Turkey, ahead of two upcoming international friendlies.

Ndidi, skipper of the side, joined his teammates at the Bellis Deluxe Hotel on Wednesday, providing a significant boost to the side as preparations intensify for matches against Iran and Jordan later this month.

Ndidi’s arrival means all invited players are now in camp, with the exception of defender Calvin Bassey, who withdrew due to injury.

Head coach Eric Chelle had earlier named Ndidi alongside Alex Iwobi and Ademola Lookman in a 23-man squad for the fixtures. However, the team will now proceed with 22 players following Bassey’s late withdrawal and Ndidi’s presence.

The Super Eagles were originally scheduled to play the matches in Amman, but the venue was moved to Antalya due to the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East. Nigeria will face Iran on 27 March before taking on Jordan on 31 March.

Team officials say Ndidi’s presence brings both leadership and stability to the squad at a crucial stage of preparations.

“We are pleased to have our captain join the team today. His presence completes the list of invited players and strengthens the group,” said Super Eagles Media Officer Promise Efoghe.

Efoghe also confirmed the absence of Bassey, who suffered a back injury while on club duty.

“It is unfortunate that Bassey had to pull out late because of a back injury. We wish him a quick recovery and hope to have him back to the team soon,” he said.

Despite the setback, the remaining players have begun intensive preparations in Antalya. The team held its first training session on Wednesday afternoon, with all available squad members taking part.

According to Efoghe, the session focused on evaluating fitness levels and sharpening key aspects of play.

“The first training session was productive. The coaches engaged the players in light conditioning, tactical positioning, and ball work to get them in shape,” he said.

Players were put through a range of drills, including ball circulation exercises, pressing routines and small-sided games, as the coaching staff assessed readiness ahead of the opening match against Iran.

“The energy and response from the players were very encouraging. You can see the determination as they prepare for the match on Friday,” Efoghe added.

Coaches are expected to increase the intensity of training in the coming days, with greater emphasis on tactics and match-specific strategies.

“Thursday’s training will be more intense and tactical as the coaches begin to focus on specific match situations and game plans,” he said.

The squad in camp includes a mix of experienced internationals and newer call-ups, all aiming to impress ahead of the two fixtures. With the full group now assembled, attention turns firmly to fine-tuning performance as Nigeria seek positive results in Antalya.
