The Brave Warriors of Namibia will take on Russia in an international friendly on 3 October after the Namibia Football Association (NFA) reached an agreement with the Russian Football Association.
The match will be played in Yekaterinburg, Russia, and will give Namibia the opportunity to test themselves against a strong national side as they continue preparing their players for higher-level international competition.
Brave Warriors head coach Collin Benjamin welcomed the fixture, saying matches against teams from different footballing environments can provide valuable experience for his players.
Benjamin believes the challenge of facing a highly rated national team will help Namibia’s players develop their ability to perform under pressure and prepare for the demands of continental football.
“These are the kind of competitive exposureour players need on a regular to increase the pressure, the experience and competitiveness making them ready to face other their peers at Continental level in the CAF/Africa Cup of Nations,” Benjamin stated.
The Namibia coach said the opportunity to play outside their usual environment would also give the technical team an important chance to assess the squad.
Benjamin highlighted the demands placed on players when they face strong opposition and said such matches can help coaches understand how the team responds when placed under significant pressure.
“For us, it is critical that our players continue challenging themselves to the limit. Playing in different parts of the world, especially against highly rated National Teams contributes significantly to their ongoing development; and this give the technical team an opportunity to assess the endurance, stamina and level of pressure the Team can with-stand under extreme pressure,” he said.
The Russia fixture will therefore serve as more than a routine friendly for Namibia, with Benjamin viewing the match as an important part of the players’ development.
