Real Madrid head coach Jose Mourinho has urged supporters not to expect Yann Diomande to dominate La Liga immediately after the 19-year-old winger’s high-profile move from RB Leipzig.
“You shouldn’t expect him to tear the whole league apart straight away,” Mourinho said while discussing the Ivory Coast international’s early introduction to first-team football in Madrid.
Diomande joined Real Madrid from RB Leipzig for €125m, making him one of the most significant additions to Mourinho’s squad. The teenager was involved again on Saturday as Real Madrid beat Malaga 4-0 in La Liga.
He came on as a substitute in the 65th minute, giving him another opportunity to experience the demands of his new club and competition. It was the third consecutive match in which Mourinho had introduced Diomande late in the game.
The winger was also brought on towards the end of Real Madrid’s two previous fixtures. Mourinho’s decisions suggest the club are managing Diomande’s first steps carefully rather than placing immediate responsibility on a player who has only recently arrived in Madrid.
Despite the size of the transfer fee, Mourinho’s message was that Diomande should be allowed time to adapt. The coach’s comments underline the difference between recruiting a highly rated young player and expecting him to become an instant match-winner in one of Europe’s most demanding leagues.
Diomande’s appearance against Malaga came during a comfortable victory for Real Madrid, who scored four times without conceding. His involvement was limited to the final 25 minutes, but it continued a pattern that has seen Mourinho gradually introduce him to competitive action.
The move from RB Leipzig has placed considerable attention on the winger, particularly because of his age and the €125m fee involved. However, Mourinho has made clear that those circumstances should not lead to unrealistic expectations at the start of Diomande’s Real Madrid career.
For now, the player’s role remains that of a late substitute. His appearances in three successive matches represent an opportunity to become familiar with Mourinho’s approach, his team-mates and the intensity of La Liga football.
Mourinho’s assessment also reflects the scale of the challenge facing Diomande.
