Motsepe heads to Senegal for high-stakes talks over disputed AFCON 2025 final

Patrice Motsepe is set to arrive in Senegal on Wednesday for high-level talks as tensions continue to escalate over the controversial Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2025) final decision.

The Confederation of African Football president is expected to meet with Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye as well as the country’s Football Federation chief Abdoulaye Fall, following through on a pledge made more than a week ago to engage directly with all parties involved.

At the heart of the crisis is the CAF Appeals Board’s ruling to award the AFCON title to Morocco national football team after a chaotic final against Senegal. The decision, which cited regulatory breaches following Senegal’s refusal to continue the match, has since been strongly contested.

CAF invoked its disciplinary framework, including provisions that deem a team that abandons or refuses to continue a match as having forfeited, leading to Morocco being declared winners. However, Senegal have rejected the ruling, arguing that the decision undermines the integrity of the competition and sets a dangerous precedent.

The dispute has now moved beyond CAF’s internal structures, with the case officially lodged at the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Senegal are seeking to overturn the ruling and reclaim what they believe is rightfully theirs, while Morocco continue to prepare for upcoming competitions with the title officially recognised in CAF records.

In a further escalation, Senegalese authorities have signaled their willingness to push for an independent international investigation into alleged corruption linked to the decision. A move that has significantly raised the political stakes.

The fallout has also played out among supporters. Anger has been amplified by the reported detention of 18 Senegalese fans in Rabat following the final, adding another layer of tension to an already volatile situation.

Motsepe has consistently called for calm and dialogue, positioning his visit as an opportunity to de-escalate tensions and restore confidence in African football’s governing structures. His intervention is seen as crucial at a time when CAF’s credibility has come under intense scrutiny from multiple quarters, including players, officials and former stars who have questioned the handling of the case.

Beyond the immediate dispute, the controversy has reignited broader concerns about governance, transparency and consistency in decision-making within African football. Critics argue that the situation risks damaging the reputation of the continental game at a time when its global profile is rising.

Motsepe’s trip to Dakar is therefore viewed as more than a diplomatic gesture. It represents a critical attempt to manage one of the most complex crises in recent CAF history. One that intertwines sport, politics and legal battles, with the final outcome now resting in the hands of CAS.
