Morocco forward Sakina Ouzraoui has delivered a message of unity after her side drew 0-0 with Senegal at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2026, insisting that football should not be overshadowed by political tensions or historic rivalries.
The Barcelona-born player spoke in the mixed zone after the match, which followed Morocco’s 1-0 victory over Algeria in the tournament. Her comments came during a campaign in which Morocco have faced two opponents with whom relations have at times extended beyond sporting rivalry.
Ouzraoui emphasised the importance of fraternity between African national teams, arguing that competition on the pitch should not lead to hostility between players or peoples.
Her message also reflected the differing relationships Morocco has with Senegal and Algeria. Relations with Senegal have been cooler since controversies surrounding the final of the 2025 men’s Africa Cup of Nations, while political ties between Morocco and Algeria remain particularly strained, notably over the issue of Western Sahara.
Against that backdrop, Ouzraoui’s call for “no hatred towards Senegal or Algeria” offered a simple but powerful reminder of football’s ability to bring people together.
The sport is often shaped by long-standing sporting, historical, identity-based and political rivalries. However, the Morocco international stressed that those tensions should not remove respect between competing players or nations.
Football continues to provide a shared language, allowing countries that may be distant in other areas to meet on the same field. A sporting rivalry, Ouzraoui’s message suggested, does not have to become hostility.
Morocco have already experienced both sides of that rivalry during this tournament. The Lionesses began by beating Algeria 1-0 before drawing goalless with Senegal.
They will now prepare for another major test, with a quarter-final against South Africa scheduled for Saturday. A place in the semi-finals will be at stake.
The result against Senegal leaves Morocco’s campaign moving towards a decisive stage, but Ouzraoui’s intervention provided a broader perspective on the significance of the competition. At a tournament involving nations with complex sporting and political relationships, she chose to underline common ground rather than division.
