Mohammed Mukhtar: Nigerian defender joins Rivers United from Kano Pillars

Rivers United have added Nigerian centre-back Mohammed Mukhtar to their squad after the 22-year-old completed a move from Kano Pillars.

Mukhtar, a right-footed defender standing at 1.88m, joins the Port Harcourt club from their Nigeria Premier Football League rivals, strengthening the heart of their back line ahead of the new campaign. The transfer continues his rapid rise through the domestic game, with his market value currently listed at €50,000.

The move marks the latest step in a busy two years for Mukhtar, who joined Kano Pillars from Kanemi Warriors in July 2025 before establishing himself as a regular in the NPFL. He now switches to Rivers United, one of the league’s leading sides in recent seasons, after catching the eye with consistent performances.

Mukhtar has already built up significant top-flight experience for his age, making 61 league appearances and registering one goal and one assist while accumulating more than 5,200 minutes of NPFL football. He has also featured on the continental stage, playing twice in the CAF Confederation Cup and completing 180 minutes in that competition.

Primarily a central defender, Mukhtar’s profile and experience at both domestic and continental level add depth and physical presence to Rivers United’s defensive options.

The transfer was finalised on 20 July 2026, with Mukhtar now registered as a Rivers United player.
