Mohamed El Shenawy will miss Egypt’s upcoming matches after the Al Ahly goalkeeper suffered a second-degree strain in his left adductor muscle during training on Wednesday.
An Al Ahly source told WinWin that El Shenawy was injured during the morning session and is expected to be sidelined for at least 10 days.
The injury was confirmed by Al Ahly’s medical staff, with Dr Ahmed Gaballah, head of the club’s first-team medical department, revealing that El Shenawy and team-mate Taher Mohamed Taher had suffered separate injuries during the club’s preparations.
Gaballah said El Shenawy sustained the second-degree strain in his left adductor during Wednesday’s training session at the Mokhtar El Tetsh Stadium in Gezira.
The goalkeeper has already started a programme of physical therapy and rehabilitation as he works towards recovering from the injury and returning to group training.
El Shenawy’s absence represents another setback for the Egyptian national team coaching staff as preparations continue for the upcoming matches.
Al Ahly’s medical team is also monitoring Taher Mohamed Taher’s condition after the player was injured during Tuesday evening’s match against Abu Qir Fertilizers.
Gaballah said medical examinations showed that Taher suffered a severe bruise and a sprain to the ligaments of his left elbow. The player will continue with his treatment and rehabilitation programme during the coming period.
There is also an update on midfielder Ahmed Nabil Kouka, who is scheduled to undergo a medical examination after the five-day rest period granted to the Al Ahly players by the coaching staff.
Defender Yasser Ibrahim, meanwhile, is expected to remain out for at least three weeks. His expected absence also confirms that he will miss the upcoming Egypt national team camp.
The latest injuries come after Al Ahly secured a 2-0 victory over Abu Qir Fertilizers in the fifth round of the Egyptian League Championship.
Ahmed Sayed Zizo and Hussein El Shahat scored the goals as Al Ahly claimed the win.
The team returned to training on Wednesday at the Al-Tetch Stadium, where the coaching staff began preparations for the next stage.
While El Shenawy has started his rehabilitation programme, the extent of his absence means he will not be available for Egypt’s upcoming commitments. The national team will therefore have to proceed without the experienced Al Ahly goalkeeper as the coaching staff finalises its preparations.
