Arsenal are stepping up their interest in Tottenham captain Cristian Romero, with manager Mikel Arteta personally backing a move for the Argentina international.
The Gunners had already been linked with the 28-year-old centre-back, but the pursuit has now reportedly taken on greater importance. According to journalist Alfredo Pedulla, the idea of signing Romero is being actively promoted by Arteta as Arsenal consider whether to make an approach for the Tottenham defender.
Romero’s leadership and defensive quality have made him one of Tottenham’s most highly valued players. Arsenal are understood to rate the Argentine particularly highly, although completing a deal could prove difficult because of the strained relationship between the two clubs.
The rivalry between Arsenal and Tottenham means negotiations would be complicated even if the Gunners decide to formalise their interest. Any transfer involving a key player moving directly between the two north London clubs would be a significant deal, and Tottenham are asking for about 40m euros for Romero.
Arsenal’s desire to bring in the defender is nevertheless being driven by Arteta, with the manager said to be strongly in favour of the move. The report suggests the Premier League champions are now more determined to pursue Romero than they had been previously.
Despite Arsenal’s interest, Atletico Madrid are considered the favourites to sign the player. Barcelona are also viewed as another possible destination, giving Romero several potential options if he leaves Tottenham.
The Spanish clubs are therefore currently regarded as stronger contenders than Arsenal in the race for the centre-back. However, the Gunners remain firmly interested, and Arteta’s personal support for the proposed transfer could keep Arsenal involved in the negotiations.
Tottenham’s asking price of approximately 40m euros provides a clear indication of the financial terms that would be required. The figure, combined with the difficult relationship between the London rivals, means that an agreement between Tottenham and Arsenal would not be straightforward.
Romero’s position as Tottenham captain adds further significance to the reported interest. Arsenal are assessing the possibility of signing a player who is not only a central defender but also holds a leading role at their domestic rivals.
For now, Atletico Madrid are regarded as the leading candidates, while Barcelona remain another potential option. Arsenal, however, are continuing to be linked with Romero, with Arteta’s backing giving the pursuit renewed momentum.
