Spain’s World Cup triumph over Argentina has triggered a wave of online conspiracy theories among some Argentine fans, centred on a leaked Lionel Messi dressing-room speech that a leading Spanish newspaper has ridiculed as “crazy”.
Spain beat Argentina 1-0 in the 2026 World Cup final, securing the title with a performance widely viewed as tactically and technically dominant, even if the margin of victory remained narrow on the scoreboard.
Yet in the days after the match, a section of Argentine supporters on social media have seized on a short video of Messi addressing his team-mates before kick-off, arguing it shows something “unnatural” about the South American side’s mindset heading into the final.
Pre-match video fuels speculation
According to Spanish sports daily Mundo Deportivo, users on X (formerly Twitter) circulated a clip filmed in Argentina’s dressing room shortly before the team walked out for the final.
In the video, Messi is seen trying to calm his team-mates before they take the field.
He tells them: “هيا يا شباب، الهدوء، اهم شيء ان نكون هاديين، نفكر في اللعب فقط، وننسى كل شيء اخر، نفكر في جماهيرنا، ونفكر في اللعب”.
Translated, the captain’s message is a standard call for composure and focus on the game and on the fans, rather than on outside pressure.
However, some Argentine fans online argued that both Messi’s words and the players’ relatively subdued body language suggested they were unusually restrained and lacking visible passion just minutes before the most important match of the tournament.
Claims of players being ‘restricted’
Mundo Deportivo reports that a number of supporters went much further, suggesting that the “calmness” and absence of overt emotional intensity might be evidence that Argentina’s players entered the final “restricted” or influenced by some unknown factor.
These fans have framed the video as alleged proof that something was amiss inside the squad, floating unsubstantiated ideas that the team did not take to the pitch with full freedom or full concentration.
Such claims appear to be an attempt to find an explanation away from the tactics board and the pitch itself for Argentina’s subdued display against a Spanish side lauded for its control and superiority throughout the contest.
Spanish media mocks ‘conspiracy’
Mundo Deportivo has openly mocked the speculation, describing it as a “crazy conspiracy theory” and portraying it as a refusal by some to accept Spain’s superiority in the final.
The paper argues that fringe voices in Argentina are trying to attribute the defeat to mysterious or external factors, instead of acknowledging that Spain outplayed the world champions on the day.
It notes that Messi’s brief address was clearly aimed at calming nerves in a high-pressure environment, and encouraging his team to block out distractions and focus solely on their football and their supporters.
According to the newspaper, those remarks have been “misread” by a subset of fans keen to find hidden meaning in the footage, turning a routine piece of captaincy into the centrepiece of a speculative narrative about control and psychological interference.
Focus turns back to football
For neutral observers and many analysts, the final in North America was defined less by intrigue and more by Spain’s command of the game. Despite only scoring once, the European side were widely judged to have dominated Argentina in terms of possession, structure and chances created.
Mundo Deportivo’s line underlines that perspective, insisting that conspiracy theories cannot mask what unfolded on the pitch: a Spanish team delivering a superior performance, and an Argentina side unable to match it when it mattered most.
