Mbappé injury worry raises doubt over El Clásico showdown

Kylian Mbappé is facing a short spell on the sidelines after suffering muscle fatigue in his left hamstring during Real Madrid’s 1-1 draw away to Real Betis in La Liga on Friday, raising doubts over his availability for upcoming key fixtures, including El Clásico.

The French forward requested to be substituted in the final ten minutes of the match at the Benito Villamarín, shortly before Betis scored a late equaliser to secure a point in the 32nd round of the Spanish league season.

According to Spanish newspaper Marca, initial medical examinations have confirmed that Mbappé experienced muscle fatigue in the hamstring of his left thigh. While the issue is being treated with caution, early assessments suggest the injury is not considered serious at this stage.

Further tests, including MRI scans, are expected before Real Madrid’s next league fixture against Espanyol on 3 May 2026. The results will determine whether the forward is fit to return to action in time for a crucial run of matches.

Real Madrid head coach Álvaro Arbeloa admitted uncertainty regarding the extent of the injury when speaking after the match.

“I don’t know anything about Mbappe’s condition. He felt some discomfort and we will see how things develop in the coming days.”

The timing of the injury is particularly significant, with Real Madrid preparing for a decisive stretch of the season. Just a week after their trip to Espanyol, they are scheduled to face arch-rivals Barcelona in the highly anticipated El Clásico, a match that could play a major role in determining the outcome of the title race.

Beyond club concerns, there is also international interest in Mbappé’s fitness. The French national team is monitoring his situation ahead of preparations for the 2026 World Cup, where France national football team are set to begin their campaign against Senegal on 16 June.

Despite the injury scare, Mbappé has enjoyed a remarkable debut season in Spain since joining Real Madrid. He has scored 41 goals in 41 appearances across all competitions and added six assists, underlining his immediate impact at the club.

His performances have helped keep Madrid in contention domestically, although they currently sit second in the La Liga table with 74 points, eight behind leaders Barcelona. With the title race and European ambitions still alive, Madrid will be hoping their star forward’s setback proves to be short-lived as the season enters its decisive phase.
