Mamadou Sangare marked his first official appearance for Brentford by helping them to a 3-0 victory over Tottenham, justifying the club-record investment that brought him to England.
The 24-year-old Mali international, winner of the Marc-Vivien Foe Award as the best African player in the 2025-26 Ligue 1 season, had attracted interest from several clubs before Brentford secured his signature for €48m. He has agreed a contract running until June 2031, with the option of a further year.
Sangare played a central role as Brentford made a fast start to the new campaign at home. He supplied the assist for Keane Lewis-Potter’s opening goal in the 12th minute, creating the chance after a polished attacking move.
His contribution went well beyond that decisive pass. Operating in midfield, Sangare made an impact at both ends of the pitch and was involved in much of Brentford’s dominant performance against Tottenham.
He was subsequently named Man of the Match, with his display underlining why Brentford were prepared to pay such a substantial transfer fee for the former Red Bull Salzburg player.
The statistics reflected his all-round influence. Sangare made two interceptions and two tackles, recovered possession seven times and won the ball once in the final third. He also won 60% of his duels, all of them on the ground.
The Mali international showed the qualities of a genuine box-to-box midfielder. In possession, he completed 50% of his dribbles and created two key passes. His overall passing accuracy was 80%, including 68% in the opposition half and 94% in Brentford’s half.
Sangare previously played for RC Lens before moving to Red Bull Salzburg, and his first performance for Brentford offered an immediate indication of what he could bring to the Premier League. His left foot was already prominent in a convincing opening-day victory.
Brentford’s next league fixture is against Leeds United on Sunday, 30 August at 13:00 GMT. The match will be played at Elland Road, with Leeds now alerted to the threat posed by Sangare after his impressive debut.
The midfielder’s successful introduction provides Brentford with an encouraging start to the season and gives Sangare an early opportunity to make his mark on English football.
