Mainz 05 have completed the permanent signing of Como defender Stefan Posch, with the transfer reported to be worth €4m.
The German club officially announced the deal on 12 August, confirming that the 29-year-old Austria international has now made his move to Mainz 05 permanent after initially joining on loan from Serie A side Como for the second half of last season.
Although neither club has disclosed the financial details of the agreement, previous reports from Sky Germany put the transfer fee at €4m.
Posch will continue his career with Mainz 05 after spending the latter part of last season with the club. The Austrian defender was used primarily in central defence during the first half of his loan spell, but he can also operate in wider defensive positions.
His ability to play both centrally and on the flanks gives Mainz 05 further defensive flexibility, while the permanent agreement ensures that the player will remain with the club beyond the end of his initial loan arrangement.
The transfer brings an end to Posch’s time as a Como player, with Mainz 05 opting to retain the defender after his loan spell. The German club’s announcement confirmed the completion of the deal, but did not provide details of the agreed fee or other contractual terms.
Sky Germany had previously reported the figure involved as €4m. That amount remains a reported valuation because the official financial terms have not been made public by either Mainz 05 or Como.
Posch, who is an established Austria international, has now secured a permanent place in the Mainz 05 squad. The club’s decision follows his temporary move for the second half of the previous season and means his next chapter will continue in Germany rather than with Como in Serie A.
The defender’s main role has been in the centre of the back four, although his capacity to play on the flanks was also part of his profile during his time with Mainz 05. The agreement therefore keeps a player who can cover more than one defensive position at the club.
Mainz 05 confirmed the transfer on 12 August, while the two clubs maintained their decision not to reveal the formal financial terms of the deal. The only reported figure is the €4m sum previously cited by Sky Germany.
