Lucky gloves and big dreams: Senegalese goalie Dieng’s journey to the top

Senegalese goalkeeper Mansour Dieng has taken an unconventional route to establishing himself as a first-choice shot-stopper for US Ouakam, with his journey shaped by family influence, resilience and personal belief.

Before becoming a regular presence between the posts, Dieng began his football career as an outfield player, operating mainly in midfield and occasionally on the wings.

However, a turning point came when he was inspired by his older brother, Papa Abdoulaye Dieng, a goalkeeper known for his discipline and work ethic.

Speaking to DS Sports, Dieng explained how admiration for his brother led him to reconsider his position on the pitch. His transition to goalkeeping took place during a village tournament in Toglou, where he was handed his first pair of gloves.

“We won that match without conceding a goal. Those gloves became my lucky charm,” he said.

That moment proved decisive, setting him on a path that would eventually lead to professional football.

His official debut for US Ouakam came on the opening day of the 2022–2023 Ligue 2 season against Keur Madior.

Dieng marked the occasion with a 1-0 victory at the Caroline Faye Stadium in Mbour and was named man of the match.

Despite the promising start, his progress was temporarily halted by an ankle injury sustained midway through the campaign.

The setback forced him out for several months, allowing teammate Bécaye to step in. Nevertheless, the season ended on a positive note as Ouakam secured promotion to the top flight.

One of the most emotional highlights of Dieng’s career came during the 2023–2024 season, when he faced his brother for the first time in an official match.

The encounter, against Dakar Sacré-Cœur, ended in a 1-1 draw, but for Dieng, it represented a personal milestone.

Facing a player he once supported from the stands added an extra layer of motivation, underlining how far he had come in a short space of time.

Off the pitch, Dieng’s story reflects the financial realities of many African-based footballers. He revealed that his highest match bonus to date is 50,000 FCFA, earned after a commanding 6-1 victory over Wally Daan in Ligue 2.

More recently, he received another bonus following a 1-0 win against HLM.

Looking ahead, the goalkeeper says his priority, should he secure a move abroad, would be to provide stability for his family by purchasing a home.

Faith also plays a central role in his preparation.

Before every match, Dieng follows a consistent routine of prayer and recitation, which he credits for helping him remain focused under pressure.

That mental strength has been tested on several occasions, including a heavy collision with AS Pikine striker Mouhameth Johnson and a costly misunderstanding with teammate Abdou Aziz Cissé that led to a goal conceded against Diambars in 2023.

Still early in his career, Dieng’s journey highlights the blend of determination, humility and support systems that continue to shape emerging talents across African football.
