Paris Saint-Germain have completed the signing of France left-back Lucas Digne from Aston Villa on a three-year contract running until the summer of 2029.
The 33-year-old returns to the French capital a decade after leaving the club and becomes the reigning European champions’ third signing of the summer. The move is valued at about 7m euros, with Digne set to wear the number 12 shirt.
Paris Saint-Germain confirmed the deal in a statement which read: “Paris Saint-Germain is delighted to announce the return of Lucas Digne. The French international defender has signed a contract with the capital club until 2029.”
Digne’s arrival is intended to strengthen the left-back position and provide experienced competition and cover for Portugal international Nuno Mendes.
The transfer follows the arrivals of third-choice goalkeeper Alessandro Longoni and Norwegian midfielder Maghnes Akliouche, who both joined last Thursday. The deals form part of manager Luis Enrique and sporting director Luis Campos’ plans to reinforce the squad before the new season begins.
Paris Saint-Germain were able to make the signing at a relatively modest cost by activating the release clause in Digne’s Aston Villa contract. That clause stood at slightly less than 10m euros, allowing the French club to bring in a player with extensive experience at the highest level for a fee considered reasonable given his record.
Digne spent four years at Aston Villa after joining the club in January 2022. During that time, he established himself as a key member of Unai Emery’s side, making 182 appearances, scoring four goals and providing 24 assists.
He ended his spell in England by helping Aston Villa win the Europa League in May. Villa beat German side Freiburg 3-0 in the final under Emery.
Digne also impressed for France at the 2026 World Cup last season. He began the tournament as a substitute but moved ahead of Theo Hernandez in Didier Deschamps’ selection order and became the manager’s first-choice option at left-back.
His return to Paris reunites him with Luis Enrique, who worked with Digne during the defender’s time at Barcelona. The player first represented Paris Saint-Germain between 2013 and 2016, making 44 appearances before spending the final season of that spell on loan at Roma.
Digne left the French capital to continue a career that has also included Lille, Everton, Barcelona and Aston Villa. His return now gives Paris Saint-Germain a proven international defender with experience in several of Europe’s major leagues, while also adding a familiar face for Enrique as the club prepares for its first campaign as reigning European champions.
