Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo future hinges on Ismaila Sarr transfer

Cody Gakpo could remain at Liverpool if the club is unable to find a replacement for the Netherlands forward, according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano.

Liverpool’s hierarchy has reportedly told representatives of the 27-year-old that he will stay at Anfield if a suitable replacement cannot be secured. Gakpo’s future is therefore closely linked to the club’s efforts to strengthen its attacking options, with a possible move for Crystal Palace winger Ismaila Sarr central to the situation.

The report suggests Liverpool are considering whether Sarr could arrive at the club before making a final decision on Gakpo’s position in the squad. If that replacement is not found, the Merseyside club is prepared to retain Gakpo rather than allow him to leave without bringing in another forward.

Gakpo has already agreed personal terms with Manchester City, although the player himself would not oppose remaining at Liverpool if the club ultimately decides against selling him. His willingness to continue at Anfield means the situation is not dependent solely on his agreement with Manchester City.

Instead, Liverpool’s decision is understood to rest on whether they can complete a replacement signing. The possible arrival of Sarr from Crystal Palace is consequently an important factor in determining whether Gakpo departs or remains with the Merseyside club.

Gakpo joined Liverpool in January 2023, moving to England from PSV. Since then, the Dutchman has been part of the club’s attacking group, but his current situation has become the subject of transfer speculation after terms were agreed with Manchester City.

Liverpool’s message to Gakpo’s representatives provides a clear condition for the proposed move: if the club can find a replacement, his departure remains possible; if it cannot, he may continue his career at Anfield.

For now, no final outcome has been reported. The next stage of the situation is expected to depend on Liverpool’s recruitment plans and, specifically, on whether their interest in Crystal Palace winger Ismaila Sarr develops into a transfer.

Gakpo’s future is therefore still open despite his agreement with Manchester City. A move away from Liverpool remains possible, but the forward could stay with the club if the Merseyside side decides it cannot replace him.
