Liverpool are continuing negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain over a possible £145m deal for Bradley Barcola, but the two clubs remain a long way apart in their valuation of the France international.
PSG are asking for £145m for the 23-year-old winger, while Liverpool’s current upper limit is understood to be about £120m. The Premier League club are currently discussing a figure closer to £100m, leaving a substantial gap between the two sides.
That difference explains why Liverpool are seeking a compromise rather than simply agreeing to PSG’s demands. The deal is not considered to be off, but the length of the negotiations is becoming an increasingly important consideration for the Reds.
Discussions are expected to intensify again on Thursday, after PSG’s UEFA Super Cup match against Aston Villa. Liverpool will use that stage of the talks to assess whether a structure can be found that works for both clubs.
The player’s willingness to move to Anfield is not regarded as a problem. Barcola’s representatives have already spoken to Liverpool, and personal terms are not currently viewed as an obstacle.
The central issue is the transfer fee and PSG’s position on the winger’s future. The French club would be content to retain Barcola, who has two years remaining on his contract, and there is no financial pressure forcing them to sell.
Barcola, however, has rejected several attempts to extend his stay in Paris. He has also indicated that he would like to take on a new challenge, a position that has encouraged Liverpool to continue exploring a possible move.
Liverpool’s interest comes as other leading European clubs monitor developments. Arsenal have already emerged as a potential suitor, while Arsenal, Manchester City and Bayern Munich are also understood to be following the situation closely. Barcelona are believed to be keeping a close eye on events as well.
The presence of alternative interest means Liverpool must decide how far they are prepared to pursue the deal. They remain keen on Barcola but do not want to pay beyond their valuation simply to reach an agreement with PSG.
For now, the negotiations are focused on finding common ground between Liverpool’s current £100m position, their understood £120m ceiling and PSG’s £145m asking price. The next round of discussions is likely to provide a clearer indication of whether that gap can be narrowed.
Liverpool are therefore not walking away from Barcola, but the transfer has entered a decisive phase. PSG’s willingness to keep the player, combined with the absence of financial necessity to sell, gives the French club a strong negotiating position. Liverpool must determine whether a compromise is possible before the talks continue for too long.
