Liverpool have reached a verbal agreement with Barcelona to sign defender Ronald Araujo on loan, in a surprise move designed to strengthen their defence during the current summer transfer window.
The agreement was reported by Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, who said a deal had been reached between the two clubs for the Uruguay international to move to the English side temporarily.
Barcelona sporting director Deco has approved the proposed transfer, according to Romano. The move is expected to see Araujo join Liverpool as a new addition to the club’s defensive options.
Although the deal has been described as a verbal understanding rather than a completed transfer, it represents an unexpected development in the summer market. Liverpool’s interest in Araujo has emerged as the defender’s position at Barcelona appears to have become less secure under manager Hansi Flick.
Araujo has reportedly fallen significantly out of favour with the German coach, who is expected to rely primarily on Pau Cubarsi and Gerard Martin in central defence next season.
