Kylian Mbappe faces historic Real Madrid scoring test as new season nears

Spanish media are demanding even more from Kylian Mbappe before the new season begins, despite the Real Madrid forward having scored 86 goals in 102 appearances for the club over the past two years.

The renewed scrutiny has focused on whether Mbappe can once again finish as the leading scorer in the Spanish championship. According to Spanish newspaper AS Diario, expectations are that the France international will claim the scoring crown for a third consecutive time.

That would represent a landmark achievement for a Real Madrid player. No member of the club has managed to become the leading scorer in the Spanish championship three seasons in a row during the past 40 years, including Cristiano Ronaldo.

Mbappe’s record means the pressure is not being generated by a lack of production. His total of 86 goals in 102 matches for Real Madrid over the last two years has already established a prolific return since his move to the Spanish capital in 2024.

However, Spanish media are presenting that record as a platform for further demands rather than as a reason to reduce expectations. The focus is now on whether Mbappe can maintain the same level and add another scoring title to his record.

The prospect of a third successive individual scoring award places the forward in a category no Real Madrid player has reached in four decades. Cristiano Ronaldo, despite his achievements for the club, also did not manage to lead the Spanish championship’s scoring charts for three consecutive seasons.

Mbappe therefore begins the campaign with a specific target attached to his performances. The expectation reported by AS Diario is not simply that he will remain among the leading scorers, but that he will finish first again.

His arrival in Madrid in 2024 remains the starting point for the current period under examination. Since then, he has scored 86 times in 102 games, a figure that has nevertheless failed to end the discussion over what more he can deliver.

As the new season approaches, Spanish coverage has once again turned its attention to Mbappe’s output and his ability to meet the highest possible standard. The challenge described by the Spanish press is clear: repeat his scoring success and make history by becoming the first Real Madrid player in the past 40 years to win the Spanish championship’s scoring title three seasons in succession.

For Mbappe, the demand comes despite and because of the scale of his existing numbers. His goals have set a high benchmark, while the possibility of a third straight scoring crown has raised expectations still further.
