Kevin Trapp hopes his performances for Paris FC will persuade new Germany manager Jurgen Klopp to bring him back into the national team.
The 36-year-old goalkeeper has won nine caps for Germany, although his most recent appearance came in November 2023. Despite being outside the international set-up at present, Trapp says he continues to follow the national team and remains interested in earning another opportunity.
His immediate priority, however, is to establish himself as one of the leading performers for Paris FC and reproduce the form he showed last season.
“I’m still following the national team,” Trapp said, while making clear that his principal focus is succeeding with his club. He believes maintaining a high standard in Paris would give him the best chance of attracting Klopp’s attention.
Trapp was included in Germany’s squads for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups but did not play in either tournament. Now 36, he says he feels stronger than he did earlier in his career and believes his physical and mental condition should not prevent him from competing for selection.
“I am surprisingly good physically and mentally, better than a few years ago,” Trapp said.
The goalkeeper initially joined Paris FC as a second-choice player, but his performances quickly changed his status. He became the club’s first-choice goalkeeper last season and is now aiming to maintain that position while continuing to perform at a level that could put him back into international contention.
Trapp also expressed strong confidence in Klopp, who has taken charge of Germany. The pair are familiar with one another from Trapp’s time at Eintracht Frankfurt, where the goalkeeper played from 2012 to 2015 before returning for a second spell between 2018 and 2025.
During his time with Eintracht Frankfurt, Trapp won the Europa League with the club four years ago. His long association with the team means he has watched Klopp’s coaching career closely and believes the new Germany manager has the personality and methods required to succeed.
“We all know what kind of coach he is,” Trapp said.
He added that Klopp “can motivate those around him,” before explaining: “He can generate a lot of energy, and he is successful wherever he goes.”
Trapp’s last Germany appearance was in November 2023, and he has not featured for the national team since. His path back will therefore depend on his continued form for Paris FC, but the veteran goalkeeper remains convinced that his current level, combined with Klopp’s knowledge of his qualities, could give him another chance to represent Germany.
