Kevin Danso will continue his career at another Premier League club after Tottenham Hotspur completed an agreement for the defender to join Sunderland on loan with an option to buy.
The 27-year-old Austria international is due to undergo a medical with the Black Cats on 1 September. The potential permanent transfer is understood to be worth about 29m euros.
The agreement was reported on social media by transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, who said the loan deal with an option to purchase Danso had been completed.
Danso spent last season with Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League, making 24 appearances. The Austria defender was shown eight yellow cards during that campaign.
His move to Sunderland comes after two rounds of the new league season. Sunderland are currently 11th in the Premier League, while Tottenham Hotspur sit second from bottom.
The deal gives Sunderland the opportunity to make Danso’s move permanent for a fee of approximately 29m euros. For now, however, the defender’s next stage will be a loan spell at the club.
Danso’s arrival would take him from a Tottenham side near the bottom of the early standings to a Sunderland team positioned in 11th place after the opening two matches. His medical on 1 September is the next scheduled step in the transfer process.
The Austrian has already accumulated significant Premier League experience, having played 24 times in the competition last season. His disciplinary record from that period included eight bookings.
Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland are therefore set to be directly involved in the move, with the initial agreement structured as a loan rather than an immediate permanent transfer. The option to buy would allow Sunderland to complete a permanent deal for around 29m euros at a later stage.
The transfer would see Danso remain in the Premier League while changing clubs in the competition. He is set to leave Tottenham Hotspur for Sunderland, with the completion of his medical the immediate focus on 1 September.
